Public Works Road Maintenance Technician - Level I or Level II

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs a variety of enter level and or skilled work related to asphalt and concrete work, flagging, snow plowing and routine equipment maintenance.

Performs and assists in the maintenance and construction of the Grantsville City Public Works Department functional areas and related equipment; operates and maintains various types of maintenance equipment and tools; prepares and maintains departmental maintenance records (iWorq); utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE); and performs other duties as assigned.

  • 3 years' experience in light construction work including asphalt and cement finishing required for level II.
  • ATSSA flagger and traffic control tech certifications are required for level II.
  • LTAP training is required for level II.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DECISION MAKING

  • Participates in maintaining and repairing Grantsville City's roads, parks, cemetery, water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Report progress of work performed; ensure workload is thoroughly completed as assigned.
  • Perform data entry; updates and maintains departmental records and databases; inputs work order and field data information.
  • Assists with dig-out and replacement of damaged sections of road.
  • Performs maintenance of curb, gutter and sidewalks in City ROW. Participates in various seasonal projects such as snow plowing or City events, activities, and promotions.
  • Transport material and equipment.
  • Install, replace, and maintain street signs.
  • Performs road striping and all other types of road maintenance.
  • Cleans storm drains, repairs and replaces damaged pipes.
  • Participates in worksite safety procedures; sets up barricades, safety signs, and signals; may perform flagging duties to ensure work zone safety.

Miscellaneous:

  • Operates and maintains crew vehicles and equipment; conducts vehicle inspections.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and training courses.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience)

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Water/wastewater maintenance experience is preferred.
  • Utah Division of Drinking Water or Wastewater Collection certification is desirable within one (1) year of employment.
  • A Class B Commercial Driver's License is required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Required to perform after hours on-call duties.
  • Must be able to respond within 1 hour for emergency calls.
  • Additional coursework from a trade or technical school is preferred.
  • Valid Utah Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • At least two years of experience operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be at least 18 years old to apply.

CORE COMPETENCIES AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Effective verbal communication skills are required; must be able to maintain positive working relationships with City departments and personnel, outside agencies, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and equipment common to municipal public works operations. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include lifting up to 80 pounds occasionally. Subject to vision and hearing protection constantly; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching and handling frequently; sitting, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, talking and foot controls occasionally; crawling rarely.

Working conditions involve exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, open trenches, confined spaces, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases. Utilizes confined space equipment or other personal protective equipment as required.

Safety Sensitive Position.

Work Hours

7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., M-F; On-call availability required.

FULL-TIME POSITION 40 HOURS PER WEEK

This is a full-time position with Medical, Dental, and Vision Benefits available. This also includes retirement through Utah Retirement System with up to a 3% 401k match. Grantsville City observes 13 holidays throughout the year. Generous vacation and sick leave accrual.
