General Summary
Responsible for enforcing county animal control laws, ensuring public safety, and promoting humane animal treatment.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrols assigned areas to capture and contain stray, dangerous, or mistreated animals.
- Investigates animal-related complaints, including those involving rabies, bites, and neglect.
- Issues warnings and citations for ordinance violations; assists law enforcement with arrests or animal seizures.
- Responds to calls regarding wildlife and domestic animals of all sizes.
- Provides emergency assistance, including rescues and euthanasia when necessary.
- Maintains accurate records of incidents, citations, and quarantines.
- Operates and maintains county vehicles and specialized animal handling equipment.
- Assists the public with reclaiming lost pets and removing deceased animals.
- Rotates on-call shifts for after-hours emergencies.
- Supports law enforcement during incidents involving animals.
- Attends training to stay updated on animal control procedures and regulations.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assists with shelter operations as needed, including cleaning and care.
- Performs related tasks as assigned.
Required Skills & Knowledge
- Understanding of state and local animal control laws.
- Knowledge of safe animal handling and capture techniques.
- Ability to recognize and assess different animal breeds and behaviors.
- Strong public communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to maintain detailed records and testify in court when necessary.
- Physical ability to handle aggressive animals and perform fieldwork in various conditions.
Physical Demands
- Must be capable of climbing, kneeling, lifting (100 lbs), and performing strenuous tasks.
- Must have the visual acuity to identify animals, read reports, and operate a vehicle.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with animal handling and public interaction preferred.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must obtain euthanasia and rabies certification within six months of hire.
