Classified positions at Grays Harbor College have been designated as bargaining unit positions represented by the Washington Public Employees Association, Local 365. - Empty trash, dust, wipe down furniture, clean white and black boards.
- Dust mop, clean and polish and damp mop, chemically strip and wax as needed to provide care for hard floors.
- Vacuum carpets, shampoo and spot clean as needed to provide general carpet care.
- Stock supplies, clean, mop and sanitize floors, walls and partitions of rest rooms and showers as needed to meet cleanliness standards.
- Wash windows and glass doors, inside and outside, as needed to meet cleanliness standards.
- In response to facility use forms, do set-ups and tear-downs of furniture for meetings and functions, including moving kitchen equipment, supplies and materials to and from events.
- Dump shredding and recycling bins.
- Do minor repairs to lights, plugged sinks and toilets, furniture and equipment and locks as needed.
- Stock supplies in custodial closet for building for which employee has responsibility.
- Observe safety rules and regulations; identify & report safety issues, posting warning signs as needed.
- Lock doors and windows daily to secure the campus buildings.
- Move and/or assemble furniture as needed.
- Know and follow procedures for safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials and exposure to bodily fluids and possible blood-borne pathogens.
- Respond to campus needs and emergencies during working hours.
- Custodial knowledge: Knowledge of cleaning methods, safety practices, chemicals, equipment and supplies used in general custodial work.
- Move or relocate objects: Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and 100 pounds maximum on a seldom basis for buffer and debris, always able to get help from a coworker; frequently carrying 15 pounds or less and seldom carrying over 45 pounds, using hand trucks, carts, etc. as appropriate.
- Work at heights: Willing and able to work at heights including on ladders, tall structures and aerial lifts.
- Work in confined spaces: Willing and able to safely work in confined spaces, such as under furniture, in closets and small rooms.
- Equipment Operation: Understands operation of and skillfully operates all maintenance custodial tools, equipment and vehicles, learning the functions and limitations of each, using each for its intended use only, protecting all equipment from damage and misuse and consistently following safety and legal regulations when handling and operating. Monitors equipment to ensure proper operations and conscientiously adheres to proper maintenance schedule, responding appropriately to equipment malfunctions, seeking assistance when necessary and ensuring equipment is fully operational prior to resuming use.
- Basic repair & maintenance: Ability to repair or replace light bulbs, fuses, light switches, light fixtures, doors, hardware, windows, locks, gutters, tables, desks, chairs, cabinets, faucet washers, toilet tank flush valves, etc.
- Communication Effectiveness: Communicates with individuals and groups within and outside of the department, face to face or using telephone or two way radio. Keeps supervisor and co-workers informed of need-to-know items, sharing complete and accurate information; listens to feedback and concerns; efficiently using a two way radio, telephone. Willing and able to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
- Accountability: Accepts personal responsibility for the quality, timeliness and safe performance of work; clearly understands customer expectations and ensures that work meets those expectations.
- Safety: Understands and follows applicable laws, regulations and other standards to establish and/or maintain a safe work environment, carefully planning and organizing workspace to minimize the likelihood of accidents or unsafe incidents. Observes and reports potential hazards and follows all relevant safety policies and procedures. Attends safety trainings. Has the knowledge, training and ability to properly use personal protective equipment and uses it properly when indicated.
- Team player: Willing and able to participate as a member of a team approach to providing maintenance custodial services to the campus; cooperating with co-workers to accomplish tasks, recognizing the value of co-workers input, asking for assistance when needed, providing coverage when someone is ill or on vacation; participating as part of the team to set up for large meetings, prepare the Bishop Center for a performance, move large pieces of furniture or equipment and move a variety of items on and off campus.
- Time management: Effectively prioritizes work activities, to ensure smooth and efficient operations, identifying and procuring tools, information, equipment and other necessary resources, and making arrangements in a timely and efficient manner. Keeps interested parties informed of changes or new developments.
- Read & write: Reads and comprehends custodial supply and chemical container labels, Safety Data Sheets, work orders and facility use forms, in English.
- Willing and able to travel to off campus locations.
- Observation & Inspection: Observes campus structures, equipment, environments, etc., to detect potential problems or issues that must be corrected, understanding the appropriate action to respond to anticipated problems or events.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of experience in custodial, general or building maintenance, grounds keeping, or semi-skilled carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing repair work.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid Washington state driver's license is required.
