GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Positions assigned to the Grays Harbor County Court Security Officers are court officers who provide protection and security for the Grays Harbor County Superior and Juvenile Courts and respective facilities. Responsibilities include providing essential security functions to assigned court facilities by maintaining order and ensuring the personal safety and security of judges, staff, the court facility and the general public. Monitors and responds to courtroom and court facilities emergency alarms. Responds to calls for security services and assistance. Required to make arrests, serve warrants and make probable cause arrests without a warrant and carry out the orders of the court. This class specification reflects the general concept and intent of the classification and should not be construed as a detailed statement of all the work requirements that may be inherent in a position.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:
Court Security Officers will be assigned a courtroom and remain in that courtroom while court is in progress. Court Security Officers may introduce the judge as the judge enters the courtroom and have all present stand upon the judge entering. Court Security Officers will ensure prior to court convening that the courtroom has been swept for all suspicious and unauthorized objects and unauthorized persons. Once cleared and secured the courtroom will be opened to the public. Due to the variety and high profile of many cases the Court Security Officers may be required to use restraint or force, up to and including deadly force as deemed reasonable and necessary. Court Security Officers may make arrests if required and prepare incident and arrest reports. May be required to assist with control and limit public access to the court facilities to reduce security risk and ensure public safety. Responds to alarms, bomb threats, and safety concerns and assists with building evacuation. Will respond to calls for security assistance, emergency situations, and provides escort duties for judges, court staff and individuals in a threatened or endangered situation. Implements first aid procedures as necessary. When required, calls for assistance from local law enforcement and/or emergency response units. Utilizes pagers, telephones, and portable radios to maintain communications with other security personnel and/or other agencies responding to calls for assistance. Provides aid to responding agencies as requested. Provides general information, direction, and assistance to the public. Performs other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:
Positions assigned to the Court Security Officer classification are distinguished by the primary responsibility for maintaining a secure environment throughout the courtrooms for judges, staff, and general public. Court Security Officers are armed, commissioned officers with full powers of arrest, search and seizure and responsibility for the use of force up to and including deadly force, and are required to have a law enforcement background and specialized training.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a courthouse setting and involves sitting and standing in the courtroom throughout court proceedings. Primary duty is the safety and security of the judge and courtroom staff as well as the public in attendance. Danger of physical harm may be present in dealing with hostile or aggressive individuals or while escorting people in the courthouse complex and parking area. Lifting of equipment, files or exhibits weighing up to 25 pounds may be required. May be required to stand for periods of up to several hours.QUALIFICATIONS:
Be at least 21 years of age. Be a high school graduate or have passed the GED test. No record of a felony conviction. No record of gross misdemeanor/misdemeanor conviction for crime involving controlled substance or physical harm. Two years experience in law enforcement, including experience with security measures and devices and crowd control. Applicants must currently be certified as peace officers pursuant to Title 43 RCW or must have previous peace officer certification under that chapter. Must meet standards to obtain limited commission from Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office. Must pass a background investigation. May be required to pass psychological and/or polygraph examinations. Must be trained and qualify with a short firearm with requirement to successfully re-qualify every 6 months with Sheriff’s Office. Valid Washington State Driver’s License. Must maintain a valid First Aid Card with certification in the use of the Life Pak Emergency Defibrillator.
