About the Position:
The Great Basin Institute is recruiting a Botany Technician to support the Bureau of Land Management's Carson City Field Office. The successful candidate will work under the direction of BLM resource specialists to survey, map, assess, and monitor sensitive species. Key responsibilities include recording habitat condition, plant diversity, and native/non-native species invasions, as well as documenting impacts on plants or habitats resulting from livestock overgrazing and off-highway vehicle damage.
Duties:
The position involves approximately 90% fieldwork, including driving and walking over rough terrain, and 10% office work. Office duties include using GIS, entering data, processing seed collections, reporting writing, and creating lesson plans. Housing and training will be provided by the organization. Team members should be dedicated to working collaboratively with others who have different backgrounds and perspectives. Qualifications:

- Record habitat condition, plant diversity, and native/non-native species invasions.
- Map noxious weeds and collect native seed for the Seeds of Success (SOS) restoration program.
- Data collection using mobile devices and various apps.
- Synthesize field data with ancillary datasets and devise management actions to restore sensitive species and their habitats.
- Enter collected data into GIS and accompanying databases.
- Other duties may include environmental outreach with youth and adults.

- Bachelor's degree in Botany, Plant Ecology, Forestry, Rangeland Management, or Natural Resources.
- Basic knowledge of plant biology and ability to identify plants down to the species level.
- Knowledge of Great Basin-Eastern Sierra Nevada vegetation is desirable but can be gained while on the job.
- Ability to operate a Utility-Task-Vehicle (UTV).
- Familiarity with common software applications, such as ESRI, Google Maps, Word, Excel, and Adobe.
- Experience with data entry and QA/QC procedures.
- Reliable team-player with strong leadership and communication skills.
- Clean, valid state-issued driver's license.
- Housing will be provided via federal housing in Lee Vining, CA.
- Training will be provided by the Bureau of Land Management.
- $21/hour with overtime at 1.5x hourly rate.
