Description

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) seeks to hire a Research Librarian to join the Cultural Resource Services (CRS) Program and work cooperatively with the National Park Services Yellowstone National Park (YELL) staff in support of the Parks museum/archives/library program.

Specific duties associated with archives management and data processing include:

Complete original cataloging, using RDA, of a wide range of materials, such as books, journal articles, dissertations, 16mm films, VHS tapes, DVDs, and ephemera;
Provide reference services to broad array of researchers (students, scientists, teachers, genealogists, film producers, park staff) on all topics related to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem;
Perform light conservation treatment (i.e. book repair) and preventive maintenance (i.e. custom storage enclosures) on library holdings;
Digitize non-copyrighted material and make accessible on-line through sites such as the Montana Memory Project;
Acquire and process new and donated library items;
Research and write articles on museum collections;
Support programs and tours for the public;
Digitization of materials;
Provide research and reference assistance for patrons;
Help train and supervise interns and volunteers;
Work on a special project to rehouse photograph albums; and

Other tasks as assigned by Supervisory Museum Curator, or other designated leadership.


The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required, and lifting and moving heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more.

Compensation and Benefits:

Wage: $23.49/hour for the Research Librarian position

Housing is not available

Location

The librarian position will be stationed at the Yellowstone Heritage & Research Center within the park boundary Gardiner, Montana. Yellowstone National Park is located in the Rocky Mountains. Temperatures vary from an average of 75 degrees in the summer to below freezing at other times. Many community facilities such as grocery stores, a drugstore, motels, & restaurants are available in Gardiner, Montana just 5 miles north of park headquarters. Full-services amenities are available 60 miles north in Livingston, MT and 90 miles northwest in Bozeman, MT. Medical clinics are available in Mammoth (year-round) and seasonally (summer) at Lake and Old Faithful.

The North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance is the only road open to wheeled vehicles all year. Year-round visitation is steadily trending toward significant increases in autumn, winter, and spring. Mammoth Hot Springs is the only year-round, NPS visitor services operation in the park. Albright Visitor Center is open 364 days per year and currently closed Thanksgiving. Master's degree in library science

1 year of professional experience as a librarian

Intermediate or higher skills using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data;

Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude;

Ability to work productively, consistently, and independently or cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;

Ability to complete activities involving prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more, and regularly walking/driving between curation and other facilities;

Possess a valid, clean state-issued drivers license; and

Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the goals and objectives of the position and the mission of GBI.

Ability to work with minimal direct supervision;

Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a diverse audience, including co-workers, members of the public, and agency personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in collections management, including cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, housing, and conservation of collections of diverse types of works on paper;

Experience with supervision and training of interns and/or volunteers.

The successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior Background Investigation or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning this position.
