The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with BLM Utah, is recruiting an Ecological Analyst to provide GIS, data management and administrative support for the Colorado Plateau Native Plant Program and the DOI Central Plateaus and Mountains project under the overall umbrella of the National Native Seed Strategy for Rehabilitation and Restoration. Project goals will be advanced by using analytical geospatial tools to help strategically prioritize native plant materials development (seed collection, seed source increase) in the context of regional vegetation communities, seed transfer zones, fire vulnerability, drought, invasive weeds and land management uses. Work will also include assisting with information synthesis and translation for reporting and outreach including assisting with the CPNPP website.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Compiling and updating project area seed collection inventory, test results, storage tracking, project/ study/ production use.
  • Updating database and maps of available plant materials and their characteristics.
  • Utilizing USGS and other online tools and data sources to evaluate plant materials needs/ gaps in the context of public land management risk factors/ future plant materials needs.
  • Applying results of analyses to assist seed collection prioritization for several collection crews.
  • Producing maps, tables, statistics and other data visualization tools for reporting and presentations.
  • Assisting with CPNPP website updates (Arc Experience Builder) including making pages and files 508c compliant.
  • Assisting with project implementation and coordination, e.g. preparations for partner and contract small and large-scale seed source increase, trials and studies needed to improve rehabilitation restoration and reclamation effectiveness.
  • Assisting with managing and distributing user-friendly information to implement CPNPP
  • Researching and compiling topical information as needed on specific species, protocols, research findings.
  • Collaborating within the Bureau of Land Management and with other federalagencies, non-profits, and plant conservation organizations.
  • Opportunities may exist for travel to project and partner locations, occasional fieldwork, and outreach and education.

Timeline:

  • Start date: December 2024, 1 year placement
  • Full time (40 hours/week)
  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hours daily

Location:

Greater Colorado Plateau region (Remote work may be possible)

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation: $24.5 hourly

  • Bachelors degree in Ecology, Botany or related discipline, or a combination of relevant education and field experience.
  • Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of ecosystem function and health, data management, statistical analyses, geospatial analysis, native seed production and /or plant propagation.
  • Experience managing and updating datasets, e.g. in Microsoft Excel and Access, R suite.
  • GIS experience including data management, map creation, spatial analysis, use of the Esri suite, including ArcGIS online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, Survey 123, and Field Maps.
  • Experience reading, interpreting and writing technical documentation.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Willing to undergo and pass required background checks.
  • Driving: Must provide a valid drivers license and possess a clean driving record.
