Description

The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management at Rawlins Field Office, WY, is recruiting 2 interns to participate in Landscape Restoration. 

Interns will have a variety of projects in the Muddy Creek Drainage (fish treatments, channel restoration, gravel augmentation, riparian planting, data collection for channel designs, monitoring past projects). Interns will also work closely with Trout Unlimited to achieve shared missions, tasks and goals.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assisting state and federal fisheries biologists with restoration efforts within the watershed. There is a long history of restoration work that has taken place in the watershed to restore native fish, improve fish passage, increase habitat diversity and resilience, and restore ecosystem health;  
  • Assist in the preparation of non-native fish removal efforts. This includes collection of stream and fish data, native fish salvage, and participating in the native fish removal efforts; 
  • Assist with planned conservation crew work including preparation of materials and identifying locations for BDA construction;  
  • Collect field data on previously installed habitat improvement projects including BDA’s and restoration reaches;
  • Harvest and plant willow stakes to increase woody diversity and improve riparian health;
  • Assist in the development, planning, and field data collection of outyear habitat improvement projects;
  • Assist in maintenance of riparian enclosures.

Timeline

  • Start date End of April, Early May, 15 Weeks;
  • Full time (40 hours/week);
  • Schedule: Potential Maxi-Flex (80 hour bi-weekly with option to take Mon or Fri Off).

Location

The Rawlins Field Office planning area is located in Carbon, Albany, Laramie and Sweetwater counties. It includes approximately 3.5 million acres of public land surface and 4.5 million acres of federal mineral estate.  The Muddy Watershed Area, located south of Rawlins Wyoming covers over 630,000 acres and includes a variety of important habitats and landscape characteristics. Muddy Creek is a tributary of the Colorado River in Southern Wyoming.  The area contains unique fish habitats that support a rare community of native Colorado River Basin fish, including Colorado River cutthroat trout, bluehead sucker, flannel mouth sucker, round tail chub, mountain sucker, and speckled dace.  

 

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation: $18.75 hourly;

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree or coursework and experience in biology, ecology, or a related field;
  • Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record;
  • Should be self‐motivated with an expressed desire to learn and ability to maintain a positive attitude; 
  • Ability to work both within a team setting and independently; 
  • Ability to navigate using maps, since GPS technology may not always be available;
  • Ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle in off-road type situations in inclement weather.

 

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority

This project is federally funded through the Public Land Corps Hiring Authority. Participants serving under this authority may be eligible for the PLC non-competitive hiring status and certificate. The PLC Authority requires all applicants meet the age and US Citizen requirements.
