Great Elm Capital Management is an asset management company that provides portfolio management and investment advisory services. It is the manager for Great Elm Capital Corp, a publicly traded Business Development Company, which invests in debt and income generating equity securities including specialty finance businesses. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Great Elm team and help support our ambitious growth goals. We are seeking a talented and motivated Senior Accountant to join our Investment Operations team. This role will play a critical part in fund operations, overseeing accounting activities, conducting research, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our investment data and financial reporting processes. The ideal candidate will have accounting experience with multiple types of investment products (e.g., private equity, hedge funds and registered investment companies). The candidate must be a strong communicator and skilled financial analyst who will make it their mission to streamline our monthly and quarterly close and consolidation processes, and financial reporting processes. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing company as an integral part of our finance team.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support with the day-to-day accounting operations for our investment funds, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial records.
  • Perform daily reconciliation of cash, positions, and transactions for the fund, identifying and resolving discrepancies as needed.
  • Review and validate trade activity, corporate actions, and other transactions to ensure proper accounting treatment in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of financial statements, investor reports, and other regulatory filings for the funds.
  • Conduct research and analysis on accounting issues, investment transactions, and regulatory changes, providing recommendations and solutions to management as needed.
  • Prepare financial statements and related reporting for review, including SEC filings as applicable.
  • Assist and support with managing the external audit process, including quarterly reviews and diligence projects.
  • Help streamline existing processes and enhance operational efficiency within the fund accounting team, leveraging technology and automation where applicable.
  • Stay informed about industry developments, accounting standards, and best practices in fund accounting, ensuring compliance and adherence to industry norms.


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation preferred.
  • 2 years of experience in fund accounting.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices, with the ability to apply them to complex investment structures and transactions.
  • Excellent research skills, with the ability to analyze information, identify key insights, and propose effective solutions.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage recurring processes and monthly/quarterly close calendars.
  • Process-oriented, hands-on approach with attention to detail, organization, reliability and a "get it done" attitude.
  • Experience with process improvement initiatives, including the ability to streamline existing processes and implement best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial software applications; experience with fund accounting systems preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively to stakeholders at all levels.
