Position DescriptionThe Lead Counselor will serve as a leader for our college counselors and provide support to our senior leadership team. The candidate must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, extremely comfortable multitasking, and able to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Reporting to the Executive Director of Operations but also working closely with our founder and other Lead Counselors, this role requires collaboration across our outreach, operations, and client relations teams to ensure success for both our counselors and clients.The Lead Counselor will be an ambassador for our company, responsible for driving growth through webinars and consultations with potential clients, presenting our services in a compelling manner that resonates with families. The majority of time will be dedicated to clients, supporting students on their journeys, and ensuring the process goes smoothly and deadlines will be met.Team OversightAssist in the interview process with college counselor candidates, make recommendations about candidates based on overall fit, knowledge base, and alignment with the companys core values Assess new hires progress throughout training, provide feedback and additional resourcesOversee 5-10 counselors, assess staffing needs, and recommend hiring when necessaryShare department management responsibilities with other Lead Counselors, such as contributing to the design and implementation of college counselor training and professional development programs Review and evaluate the performance of staffed counselors through check-in meetings, mentorship sessions, and annual reviews, ensuring they are familiar with the companys college tracking system and actively managing clients throughout the process.Provide feedback and direction to counselors who are in need of support, and corrective actions when necessaryBusiness DevelopmentServe as the face of GE College Prep, leading engaging webinars and boot camps that showcase our expertise and highlight the unique value of our counseling services, attracting prospective clients and building brand awarenessConduct one-on-one consultations with potential clients, connecting with them on a personal level while effectively communicating our offerings and demonstrating how our tailored approach can meet their specific needs to facilitate conversionsDevelop strategies and materials that effectively promote our services and enhance our outreach effortsBuild and maintain relationships with high schools and collegesClient ManagementThe Lead Counselor should maintain a caseload of around 50 clients total (potentially more if students are primarily underclassmen, or less if the students are primarily upperclassmen).Ability to make multi-year commitments to their students and meet after school hours and on weekendsDetermine counselor pairing(s) for each clientServe as the supervisor for direct reports clientsCreate / oversee / approve checklist and timeline for each gradeApprove all narrative-building and coursework recommendations, college lists, key essay topics, etc.Check-in with the families of direct reports as needed (estimated 1-2 times per year)Oversee the entire college application process for counselors, parents, and studentsServe as key escalation point of contact for clients and counselors when issues ariseQualificationsEducationBachelors degree from a Top 50 institutionMaster's degree in counseling, education, psychology, or a related field preferredExperienceMinimum of 10 years of experience in college counseling or educational leadership rolesExperience managing teams and working with a diverse student populationDeep understanding of the college admissions process, financial aid, scholarships, and standardized testingSkillsStrong leadership and team management abilitiesExceptional communication, organizational, time-management, and interpersonal skillsAbility to handle confidential information with discretionProficiency in using college counseling software and data management toolsAbility to work independently and understand when its appropriate to escalate concernsNatural ability to connect with others and build trust quickly.
