DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing technical and quality assurance functions associated with Computed Tomography (CT) and radiographic procedures using CT and other essential equipment at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. This is a specialized technical position. The incumbent prepares patients, equipment and supplies, performs/assists with CT procedures and processes images and prepares same for archive. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a qualified physician and the Senior Computed Tomography Technologist. Supervision is exercised over lower-level technical and paraprofessional employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Performs CT images, including pre and post processing of images, following prescribed protocols;
- Sets up radiographic room for CT procedures and prepares the necessary equipment to perform basic and complex CT imaging studies using a pressure injector, catheters, needles, guide wires, contrast media, anesthetic, etc. required for the study;
- Records and communicates laboratory values;
- Performs venous injections of contrast under the supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP);
- Reviews images for technical accuracy and determines the need for retakes or additional imaging;
- Orders, maintains and tracks inventory;
- Assists physician in sterile technique;
- Coordinates the scheduling and care of patients;
- Meets with vendors to discuss existing and new products;
- Assists in performing quality assurance as per mandated by appropriate governing agencies (i.e. Joint commission, NYSDOH, ACR, HCFA, NRC, OSHA, FDA, etc.);
- Observes and records patient's condition and reports significant information to physician or nurse;
- Executes established software protocols necessary for cross sectional radiography;
- Administers ionizing radiation to obtain radiographic images for diagnostic and/or interventional purposes;
- Maintains electronic imaging, processing and monitoring equipment for quality imaging;
- Performs and remains competent in all CT procedures and radiographic procedures including the use of portable fluoroscopy and portable unit.

good knowledge of contrast safety; good knowledge of CT imaging procedures; good knowledge of contrast contra-indications; good knowledge of Hospital Information System (HIS)/Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS); working knowledge of sterile technique; skill in the operation of processing equipment and pressure injectors; ability to produce high quality CT images; ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to supervise lower-level staff; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an approved school of Radiologic Technology and one (1) year of experience as a radiologic technologist.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession and maintenance of a license and current registration to practice as a Radiologic Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at the time of appointment and throughout;
- Possession and maintenance of certification to administer contrast media intravenously issued by New York State Department of Health, in accordance with New York Codes, Rules and Regulations, Title 10, Part 89.40, at time of permanent appointment and throughout;
- Possession and maintenance of American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) Certification at time of appointment and throughout;
- Possession and maintenance of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification at time of appointment and throughout.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
