HOURLY RANGE: $31.823 - $39.598
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing highly specialized technical laboratory work in the pathology section at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC) Laboratory. The incumbent performs a variety of technical laboratory procedures in accordance with standard testing methods and procedures. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher ranking technical employee for assignments and review of performance. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical employees and students engaged in laboratory work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs the routine technical procedures such as processing, sectioning and staining of tissue specimens;
Performs many special staining procedures requiring microscopic examinations for proper staining times;
Prepares solutions and reagents;
Communicates laboratory data to physicians;
Maintains records, keeps equipment clean and in working order;
Exercises care and safety in handling specimens and in using equipment;
Assists in training technical employees and medical technology students in new or revised procedures;
Keeps abreast of latest developments in the field.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of routine histopathology techniques, terminology and equipment; skilled in the performance of both routine work and many special staining techniques on tissue specimens; ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to exercise safety precautions in handling specimens and in using laboratory equipment; ability to repair and maintain laboratory equipment; ability to instruct others in laboratory practices and procedures; ability to get along with others; good judgment; initiative; resourcefulness; dependability; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a Bachelor's Degree* in Clinical Laboratory Technology or Medical Technology or related title which meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State's Education Law and Subpart 79-13 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education; or:
- Possession of a Bachelor's Degree* in Biology, Chemistry or one of the physical sciences and one (1) year of pathological laboratory technician experience; or:
- Completion of an approved Histological Technician Program which meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State's Education Law and Subpart 79-16 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education; or:
- Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Certified Histological Technician as issued by the New York State Education Department.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Certified Histological Technician as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of appointment and possession of license within 24 months, which is then maintained throughout duration of appointment; or:
Possession of a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Certified Histological Technician as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of permanent appointment and maintained throughout duration of appointment.
