DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves providing direct care to patients in a
medical/surgical setting at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent performs direct patient and assists nursing personnel in accommodating patient needs and maintaining continuity of care provided. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking nursing employee. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs basic and personal care procedures, including but not limited to feeding, bathing, shaving, changing of gowns and bed linens, assisting with ambulation and range of motion, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination;
Obtains vital signs and notifies supervisor of changes;
Monitors fluid intake and output;
Performs simple treatments and dressing changes, routine specimen collection, venipuncture, 12 Lead ECG and pulse oximetry, and records measurements;
Administers oxygen using appropriate device;
Applies abdominal binders, pneumatic pumps/leggings, splints, prosthetic devices, antiembolic stockings and ace wraps;
Cares for patient personal need items such as eyeglasses, hearing aide, canes, wheelchairs and other adaptive devices;
Completes property inventory and secures patient property according to organizational policy;
Provides nutritional care needs such as passing and collecting diet tray and nourishment, set-up trays and adaptive feeding equipment, feeds or assists as necessary;
Transports and assists patient utilizing wheelchairs, stretchers or beds;
Transfers patients from bed to cart/chair/wheelchair and back utilizing transfer assist devices such as medical lifts;
Identifies changes in patient condition and notifies supervisor;
Distributes clean linens and makes beds;
Assists in discharging and transferring patients from medical/surgical units;
Provides post-mortem care.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of nursing standards in accepted patient care; working knowledge of standard precautions and infection control precautions; skill in performing and demonstrating nursing techniques; demonstrates concern and caring for patients; ability to locate, operate and set-up patient care related equipment; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting; or:
- Possession of thirty (30) semester credit hours from a school of professional nursing*; or:
- Completion of a course of study in a school of practical nursing approved by the New York State Education Department; or:
- Completion of a certificate program as a medical assistant, medical office assistant or closely related program from a college* or university* or post-high school institution.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider within sixty (60) days of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
