DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves maintaining and operating imaging equipment and assisting in the performance of specialized radiographic studies and scans with primary work responsibility for the conduct of mammographic procedures at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent supervises staff, prepares patients, equipment and supplies following exam protocols, performs procedures, processes images and participates in quality assurance testing as required by regulations. This position differs from that of Mammography Technologist by virtue of the supervisory responsibilities. Work is performed under the Director of Imaging Services and a qualified Radiologist. Supervision and instruction may be exercised over Mammography Technologists, lower-level radiologic staff or students. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Coordinates daily operations, patient flow and supervises staff in Mammography and Imaging Service areas, including making assignments, scheduling, posting and assigning overtime, training and orientation, reviewing work, completing competency assessments and evaluations;
- Coordinates and answers questions regarding scheduling, patient information, networking and informatics;
- Maintains competency in mammography and radiologic technology procedures and protocols and performs quality control procedures and implements corrective actions when appropriate;
- Sets up radiologic room for special procedures and prepares the necessary needles, guide wires, biopsy sets, contrast media, anesthetic, etc. required for the study;
- Prepares patients for exams and translates procedure into layman terms based on professional knowledge to relieve patient of any pre-testing anxiety;
- Observes protocols and evaluates images for diagnostic quality;
- Assists physicians in sterile technique;
- Completes documentation as indicated in regulatory guidelines and monitors protocols and recommends changes to leadership team as needed;
- Conducts activities associated with performance improvement, quality initiatives, The Joint Commission, Department of Health, FDA and Mammography Quality Standards Act accreditation;
- Performs job duties in accordance with Corporate Compliance policy and adheres to its terms and conditions;
- Collaborates with department leadership to develop and implement methods to achieve established goals and objectives;
- Collaborates with staff and management to prevent and solve issues as they arise;
- Effectively completes and ensures that all electronic data is sent to its appropriate destination;
- Orders and maintains adequate supplies in the work area with items necessary to perform the daily schedule and advises supervisors of any items needed from materials management or vendor.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: thorough knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the operation and maintenance of x-ray equipment; thorough knowledge of anatomy, principles of physics and electricity; thorough knowledge of clinical procedures, equipment and ECMCC policies, Imaging Services Department that are necessary for job performance; good knowledge of safety protection and hazards in radiation; ability to work collaboratively and proactively problem solve and resolve conflicts as needed; ability to supervise and evaluate the work of others; ability to adjust and revise the work schedule; ability to operate and troubleshoot medical imaging equipment, accessories and call in for service, adhere to preventive maintenance schedule and report findings to senior staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to prepare lectures and to instruct; ability to compile reports; ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines; sound professional judgement; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited school* of Radiologic Technology and possess (3) years' experience working with mammographic procedures.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Radiologic Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at the time of application, appointment and throughout continued employment; and
- Possession of Certification in Mammography under the Mammography Quality Standards Act at the time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
- Possession of American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
- Possession of Basic Life Support Certification from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
