Description
Responsible for performing a variety of complex tasks to assist in obtaining information on microbiological substances that may be present in food/environmental laboratory samples. Performs a variety of tasks to support with testing of food matrices. Prepares samples according to standard operating procedures. Prepares microbiological media needed for testing samples. Complies with laboratory safety and ISO standards as they pertain to the microbiology laboratory. Maintains a clean and orderly work. Relies on good time management to plan, organize and accomplish daily workflow and response to periods of high sample volume. This position reports to the Microbiology Manager.
Requirements
· Weigh and hydrate samples as the first step for microbiological food/environmental testing.
· Set quantitative tests including pour plates, spread plates, petrifilm, and other methodology techniques as needed.
· Understand different liquid media categories needed for requested PCR assays and enrich samples appropriately.
· Ensure all tests are placed at the required temperatures for incubation.
· Prepare and set quality control organisms with sterile technique for routine testing.
· Prepare liquid enrichment media, agar plates, and diluents with sterile technique to conduct daily operations.
· Prepare microbiological media according to standard operating procedures, operate autoclave, obtain pH measurements, and monitor media inventory.
· Comply with all microbiology laboratory safety procedures.
· Comply with all ISO standards including following standard operating procedures, completing required documentation, performing daily and weekly QC checks, assisting with root cause investigations, and completing proficiency testing.
· Follow all standard operating procedures for department.
· Monitor supply levels utilizing a Kanban tag system and restock lab bench materials as needed.
· Maintains a clean working environment including cleaning laboratory benches, cleaning equipment, preparing tools for daily workflow, and processing liquid waste.
· Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and annual duties as requested.
· Maintains a safe and secure working environment, complies with all company policies and procedures.
· Assist with the laboratory LIMS system as needed.
· Assist fellow microbiologists as needed.
· Perform other related duties and assignments as required.
· Work overtime as needed to meet the needs of customers.
Requirements
· Experience:
Minimum of (1) years of experience working in a lab either in industry or academia.
· Education:
Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Biology or Food Science, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
· Skills:
Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment, able to handle multiple tasks, capable of prioritizing and planning work activities, excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated accuracy and thoroughness. Must be able to work with others to provide training in a professional and positive manner. Must lead by example. Must be proficient in the use of PC’s, databases, Microsoft windows applications including Excel, Word and Outlook. Must be able to safely use and operate equipment and other tools utilized in the process of performing required tasks.
