Pay rate: $60,000-$75,000 

Reports to: Vice President of Operations

Job Summary:

The Vet Clinic Director is responsible for overseeing the operations of the shelter’s veterinary clinic, including shelter medicine, surgery, and staff management. This leadership role ensures the highest standards of medical care for all animals while aligning with the shelter’s mission to improve animal welfare. The Vet Clinic Director supervises veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and supports staff, ensuring efficient workflow, regulatory compliance, and best medical practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all veterinary medical services, including preventative care, treatment, surgery, and emergency interventions.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and clinic support staff.
  • Develop and implement policies and protocols to ensure high-quality shelter medicine and surgical care.
  • Manage clinic operations, including budgeting, resource allocation, and ensuring efficiency in medical procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including licensing and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with shelter leadership to create strategies for population management and disease prevention.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to veterinary staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team environment.
  • Oversee the procurement and inventory of medical supplies and equipment, ensuring cost-effectiveness.
  • Engage in community outreach efforts, including public education, partnerships with veterinary organizations, and supporting adoption programs.
  • Participate in training staff and volunteers in proper animal care and medical procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate clinic performance, implementing improvements as needed to optimize animal care and operational efficiency.
  • Other duties/shelter duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of veterinary experience, preferably in shelter medicine, high-volume spay/neuter clinics, or nonprofit animal welfare organizations.
  • Previous leadership or management experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of shelter medicine principles, infectious disease control, and high-volume spay/neuter techniques.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Compassionate approach to animal care and a commitment to the shelter’s mission.
  • High school diploma or GED

Work Conditions:

  • This role follows a Sunday – Thursday schedule to best meet business needs. Additionally, due to the nature of the work, more than 40 hours per week may be required to ensure success in the role at times. Flexibility in work hours, including occasional evenings or extended shifts, may be necessary. 
  • Work environment includes exposure to animals, zoonotic diseases, and potentially stressful situations.
  • Physical demands include lifting animals, standing for long periods, and performing surgical procedures.
  • Must be able to work weekends and some holidays
  • Must be comfortable working with dogs and cats of all ages and temperaments
  • Maturity, good judgment, professionalism, and ability to work as a team
  • Ability to remain calm and empathetic in stressful situations
  • Compassion and empathy for animals and humans
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, stooping, carrying, and reaching
  • Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Lift 50 lbs. to waist height

Additional Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
  • Prefer familiarity with computer functions and programs such as Internet and web-based programs, Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge and work-related experience with animals
  • Possess a valid driver's license
