Position Summary
The Facilities Manager is responsible for facility maintenance, safety compliance, vendor coordination, and custodial oversight, all while considering the unique needs of a children’s museum. The Facilities Manager works proactively to address maintenance needs, manage emergency preparedness, and uphold building safety and accessibility standards to ensure the museum is a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, and volunteers.
Key Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance & Operations
- Conduct routine maintenance and repairs for museum exhibits, public spaces, offices, and exterior areas.
- Develop and carry out periodic preventive maintenance inspections to minimize disruptions.
- Manage relationships with vendors and contractors for facility upgrades, repairs, and special projects.
- Ensure compliance with building codes, ADA accessibility standards, and safety regulations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for facility-related emergencies, ensuring timely response and resolution.
Safety & Compliance
- Implement and monitor safety and security protocols in accordance with local regulations and museum policies.
- Conduct safety audits and drills, oversee emergency preparedness planning, and lead staff safety training.
- Maintain SDS (Safety Data Sheets) records and training; ensure proper handling and storage of cleaning supplies.
- Ensure museum spaces are free of hazards and meet child-friendly safety standards.
Custodial & Inventory Management
- Work with and support contracted custodial company and staff, fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability.
- Oversee inventory management and procurement of cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Assist with snow removal, exterior maintenance, and outdoor exhibit upkeep as needed.
Event Support & Collaboration
- Assist other departments with event setup and breakdown as needed.
- Coordinate with the Operations team to ensure facility readiness for special events, school field trips, and programming.
- Provide input on the annual maintenance budget and recommend cost-effective solutions.
Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- HS Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, maintenance, or a related field required.
- Advanced mechanical knowledge, including experience with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems is required.
- Experience in a public-facing environment (e.g., museum, school, or community center) is preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and facility maintenance equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a proactive mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing needs.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with staff, vendors, and contractors.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, or other collaboration tools preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb ladders for extended periods.
- Capability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 30 pounds frequently.
- Work may include exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical systems, and outdoor elements.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Occasional local travel for supplies or maintenance support.
