Definition :
Counselors in the Forest Hills School District implement the American School Counselor
Association (ASCA) National Model for school counseling programs. Guidance standards are
delivered to the students through four delivery system components: Guidance Curriculum,
Individual Student Planning, Responsive Services and System Support
Key Functions :
1. Provides developmental comprehensive guidance curriculum content in a systematic
way through classroom instruction, interdisciplinary curriculum, group activities, and
parent workshops and instruction. Lessons are proactive, prevention based and data
driven. Sample activities include:
? Study Skills
? Transitions
? Character Education
? Goal Setting
? Career Awareness
? Social Skills
2. Assists students and parents in the development of academic and career plans through
individual student planning by conducting individual or small group appraisal and
advisement. Sample activities include:
? Attendance
? Self-Advocacy
? Academic Assessment and Planning
? Career Exploration
3. Addresses students’ immediate needs through responsive services utilizing
consultation, individual and small group counseling, crisis counseling/response, referrals
and peer facilitation. Sample activities include:
? Crisis Intervention
? Academic Intervention/Referrals
? Parent Consultation
? Community Outreach/Referrals
? Individual Counseling (Academic, Career, Personal/Social)
4. Coordinates, conducts or participates in activities that contribute to the effective
operation of the school through system support utilizing professional development,
consultation, teaming, and program management and operation.
Sample activities include:
? Safety
? Publicity
? Partnerships with staff, parents and community
? Creation/Evaluation of Yearly Counseling Program
? Data Driven Interventions and Programs
? Professional Development
5. Performs other duties as assigned
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
2. Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds
3. Fast-paced environment

- Education: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in education from an accredited college or
- A valid Ohio school counselor's license or the ability to obtain one
- Excellent attendance record
