Special Education Teacher

 

10 Month Position (185 days) 2025-2026 School Year

Position Purpose:  This position provides instruction to students requiring special services.   Under general direction of a principal, provides leadership in an educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. Maintain continuous evaluation of student progress This position is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control; performs all other related work as required.

 

Essential Functions: 

  1. Develops and maintains an environment conducive to effective learning.
  2. Develops an appropriate Individualized Education Program (IEP) for all students that are determined eligible for special education services. This includes the creation of goals and benchmarks, based on assessment data and targeted curriculum standards, for the students’ areas of identified disability. 
  3. For annual reviews, initial evaluations, and reevaluations, writes and implements IEP goals and objectives and provides timely and regular progress reports. 
  1. Chairs annual review Team meetings.
  2. Provides needed accommodations for student learning and testing when If needed, participate and assist in the collection of student work in preparation for MCAS Alternative Assessment to assure progress and development.  
  1. Works collaboratively with school staff in order to implement IEPs. 
  1. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, colleagues, and parents concerning the broad academic, social-emotional, and behavioral progress of assigned students. 
  1. Participates in/follows all federal and state mandated procedures and timelines for the identification of students requiring special education services within the school setting. 
  1. Maintains compliance with all federal and state mandated timelines for the completion of special education paperwork.  
  1. Conducts academic testing for initial evaluations and reevaluations, 
  1. Provides assistance with transition services, as appropriate. 
  2. Works with general education teachers to ensure appropriate accommodations and modifications are provided in the general education setting.  
  1. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to meet the needs of students with disabilities. 
  1. Implements the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals  
  1. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 
  1. Evaluates student progress on a continuing basis.  
  1. Maintains accurate, complete and correct records by law, district policy, and administrative regulation. 
  1. Enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy. 
  1. Is available to meet with students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so. 
  1. Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods. 
  1. Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials. 
  1. Participates in staff and faculty meetings. 
  1. Participates in the evaluation process. 
  1. Performs other duties as needed. 

 

Recommended Minimum Qualification

 

Education, Training and Experience:

Must hold or be eligible for a teaching certificate with the Massachusetts Department of Education with an endorsement in applicable subject areas of instruction.
Moderate Disabilities 5-12 Certification

Knowledge, Ability and Skills:

Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge and use of materials and resources in accordance with the adopted curriculum and consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided,
Demonstrates effective classroom management skills and provides for sound and effective techniques of instruction

 

Ability.   Demonstrates the ability to adjust presentation of subject content to students needs and interests,  Effectively utilizes class space to form an environment conducive to learning and effectively uses instructional facilities, equipment and materials,
Ability to communicate effectively, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all school employees, students, teachers, parents, and vendors, ability to recognize school-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment, ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions, occasionally under time pressure.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  Must demonstrate effective knowledge of and be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population.  Willing and able to perform assigned duties in a manner that is sensitive to different personalities, respectful of the role and authority of school leaders, sensitive to community dynamics.  Serve as a role model and mentor to young students.

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. 

 

 

Supervision:

Supervision Scope: Performs routine duties that are clearly defined by the protocol and standard operating procedures. This role requires basic knowledge of departmental operations.

 

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Director of Special Education.
