Youth Violence Prevention Education Specialist –21 Century Community Learning Center Programs

Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance (GPCA) is a deeply embedded neighborhood-based nonprofit agency serving nearly 8,000 children, youth, adults, and families in the Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia. Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance is a multi-purpose social service agency emphasizing education and skill-building while providing early childhood education as an integral function of its mission to serve Point Breeze’s low-income community. Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance has been providing a comprehensive array of services to children and adults in the Point Breeze neighborhood of South Philadelphia for over a century. Services include:
- For young children: Early childhood education
- For school-age youth: Out-of-school time programming (after school and summer camp); and case management for at-risk youth
- For adults: Employment training, parenting education, energy assistance programs, housing counseling programs, and financial literacy; and
- For the community at large: Affordable housing and community economic development
STATUS: This is a Part- Time Position (20 hours per week) Monday through Friday 2:00PM-6:00pm
SUMMARY: The Youth Violence Prevention Education Specialist is responsible for providing violence prevention, social-emotional development education, and fun activities to youth in the 21 Century Community Learning Center Programs as well as spreading awareness on the risks of violence, substance misuse, and other risky behaviors among youth and its effects on the community.
Responsibilities
- Provide evidence-based violence and/or substance misuse prevention education to youth in grades 9 through 12th in the 21 Century Community Learning Center Programs
- Engage youth in national prevention and social norm campaigns.
- Serve as a mentor to teens and young adults.
- Plan and lead fun alternative activities for youth in the partnered schools and in the community to encourage the prevention of risky behaviors.
- Provide summer programming to youth through partnerships with local religious institutions, libraries, park & recreation centers, and/or youth serving community agencies.
- Engage participants in lessons and activities that will foster personal growth and development of life skills.
- Escort and supervise youth on occasional field trips.
- Identify youth and families in need of additional services and refer them case management services.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of youth and family events (e.g., youth showcases, youth-led forums, community service, family fun nights, etc.).
- Administer pre and post surveys, gather data for the required documentation, enter survey results into specific data tools, and submit on time.

- Spread awareness on violence and substance misuse.
- Assist the Lead Staff in the overall planning, implementation, and advancement of program objectives.
- Other duties within reason may be added as deemed necessary by the Lead Staff to ensure quality services.
Education and Experience
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; an associate degree or Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
- A minimum of two years of experience working in education, youth recreation, social services, juvenile justice, and/or related fields is required.
- Experience working with a diverse population in an urban environment is preferred.
- Good classroom management skills.
- Great communication skills.

- Strong organizational and time management skills.

Additional Application Requirements
- Must be able to pass a Background Records Check prior to working directly with children.
- Verification of education and work experience for the Position.
- Ability to commit to working Monday-Friday 2:00pm-6:00 pm and 9:00am-1:00 pm during the summer programming months (July-August)
