What are the responsibilities and job description for the Facilities Laborer position at Greater Providence Young Men's Christian Association?
Position Summary
The position works collaboratively with Facilities colleagues and the Facilities Director to diagnose, service, repair, and maintain equipment and facilities while delivering exceptional customer service to staff and members. This position frequently interacts with members, staff, and contractors; therefore, a positive and personable attitude is a top priority. Depending on the nature of a specific project or emergency, occasional nights and weekends may be required. All night and weekend shifts will be scheduled in advance, and the work week will be adjusted to ensure the total hours do not exceed 40. The schedule for this position is provided in advance but days of the week and hours may fluctuate.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following: other duties may be assigned.
General Maintenance and Repairs:
- Perform facility maintenance tasks including repairs of doors, hardware, furniture, carpentry, painting, and other related equipment.
- Performs general maintenance and repairs for assigned locations (examples: drywall, painting, carpentry, doors, locks, building fixtures, plumbing – fixture replacement and clog removal)
- Responds to work tickets in a timely manner, prioritizing the most important/timely issues.
- Sand, repair and paint interior and exterior areas as assigned.
- Sets up rooms and facilities for functions on and off-site.
- Troubleshoot and repair plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.
- Perform basic carpentry and drywall repairs. And floor and ceiling repairs.
- Repair or replace fixtures such as doors, windows, and locks.
- Conduct inspections to ensure the safety and proper operation of equipment.
- Respond to work tickets in a timely manner.
- Completes tasks independently and in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
- Support seasonal camp preparations and winterizing needs.
- Read & interpret blueprint, specifications, show drawings, schematic manufacturer’s specification and other references materials to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures.
Preventative and Corrective Maintenance:
- Perform a variety of corrective and preventative maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Execute general repairs and adjustments to equipment, including emergency repairs as needed.
- Use and maintain power and hand tools, including drills, saws, meters, wet vacs and test instruments.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow safety protocols, maintain compliance with building and safety regulations, and report issues to the Facilities Director.
- Maintain accurate logs for maintenance tasks and inspections.
- Check electrical breakers to ensure proper labeling.
- Perform routine cleaning tasks as necessary to keep a safe and clean environment.
Outdoor and Grounds Maintenance:
- Maintain exterior areas such as parking lots, sidewalks, landscaping, and remove snow/ice from walkways and YMCA fleet vehicles.
- Inspect and repair outdoor structures like picnic tables, benches, and other amenities.
- Ensure the safety and accessibility of trails and outdoor program areas.
- Empty outdoor trash cans and replace liners as needed.
Event Support and Emergency Response:
- Provide maintenance support for events, including repairs, unlocking doors, and responding to radio calls.
- Be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays during events or rental needs.
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance requests, ensuring swift resolution.
Vehicle Fleet Maintenance
- Making appointments and taking vehicles for scheduled maintenance
- Conduct routine inspections and perform preventative maintenance.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with the Facilities Director to ensure the prompt completion of projects on time.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and other team members to address concerns or coordinate tasks.
Additional Duties:
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Director or management team.
Qualifications, Skills, and Requirements:
- Proven experience in facilities maintenance, including knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.
- Prior experience with indoor and outdoor commercial pools is preferred.
- Personable, professional attitude and strong work ethic
- Ability to use tools and perform basic repairs.
- Familiarity with logic controllers and troubleshooting related issues.
- Strong critical thinking skills and ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- A customer service-oriented mindset with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of general maintenance experience.
- Ability to work long hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Valid driver’s license for regular travel between GPYMCA locations.
- Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor conditions during all seasons.
- Basic technology skills and/or a willingness to learn user-friendly applications like Outlook email, calendar, and lists.
