What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health & Wellness Instructor position at Greater Providence Young Men's Christian Association?
Position Summary:
Provide quality instruction of aerobic and fitness classes in accordance with YMCA standards and guidelines. Encourage participants using energy and enthusiasm.
Reports To: Program Director/Program Coordinator-Health & Wellness
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned
- Provide enjoyable, high quality class instruction.
- Appropriately demonstrate and instruct proper exercise in accordance with program standards.
- Responsible for the health and safety of all individuals in the fitness area, i.e. caution regarding unsafe practices and conditions and perform rescue/ first aid when necessary. Report accidents and injuries and complete incident reports.
- Set up and break down equipment as necessary.
- Find coverage for self in the event of an absence and then notify the Program Director of the change.
- Responsible for attending staff meetings/events.
- Work in harmony and cooperation with the staff, volunteers and members of the YMCA.
- Provide encouragement during class instruction while being enthusiastic and positive representative of the YMCA.
- Be a member service ambassador, remaining abreast of current programs and facility schedules; being prepared to provide personalized direction to other YMCA services.
- Continually enhance professional development through additional certification trainings, work shops, educational courses and/or appropriate reading material.
- Communicate with members, make them feel welcome and address them by name.
- Instruct group classes in accordance with national guidelines.

Education and/or Experience:
- High School (GED) preferred
- 1-3 years experience
Certifications / Training: (not all are required to apply)
- CPR (In-house)/ AED
- First Aid (Outreach)
- Principles of Health and Wellness (Within 3 months of hire)
- Group Exercise Instructor Certification (Within 6 months of hire)
- Foundations of YMCA Strength & Conditioning
- Foundations of YMCA Group Exercise
- YMCA Cardio and Step Aerobics Instructor
