What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Nutrition position at Greater Regional Health?
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Interview patients to obtain nutritional information regarding food habits and preferences for guidance in planning diets. Performs meal rounds and observes plate waste to evaluate acceptance and tolerance of food.
- Reviews patient medical records and completes nutritional assessment on inpatients with exception of uncomplicated OB patients and puts nutrition note to confirm diet order, review nutritional status, and include plan of care as necessary.
- Performs a complete nutritional assessment on all SNF patients within 72 hours of admission.
- Instructs patients and/or family on diets as ordered by physician. Helps maintain nutrition education materials for patients on therapeutic diets.
- Performs patient education of potential food drug interactions as necessary.
- Counsel individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life.
- Develop policies for nutritional programs to assist in health promotion and disease control.
- Inspect meals served for conformance to prescribed diets and standards of palatability and appearance.
- Confer with diet aides on patient dietary preferences and diet orders.
- Develop, review, update and implement educational materials, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching nutritional services in one on one and group settings.
- Coordinate nutritional counseling services at Greater Regional
- Write general and modified diets according to current AND nutritional standards and the Simplified Diet Manual.
- Direct interviewing, hiring, orientation and supervision of personnel working in the Clinical Nutritional Services department and the Diabetes Education program.
- Prepare and submit Clinical Nutritional Services Diabetic Education budget.
- Prepare and present nutritional programs for public health.
- Educate Food Service staff on modified/special diets as needed.
- Provide nutritional counseling for Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab programs; Diabetic Education program; Cancer Center; other Greater Regional Departments/programs and the Community.
- Supervises Greater Regional Diabetic Education program, maintains certification.
- Quality monitoring and presents results to Quality
- Make decisions quickly and in the best interest of the Clinical Nutritional Services Department and the nutritional care of patients.
- Must be able to work with and care for patients from infancy to geriatric age and be sensitive to the developmental needs of patients over the age span.
Skills, Education and Experience:
- Current Dietetic licensure in State of Iowa.
- Registration from the Academy of Nutrition and Diabetics.
- Certified Diabetic Educator
- Understand medical terminology in order to communicate with professional staff regarding dietary information preferred.
- Understand policies, principles, and procedures of dietetics, therapeutic nutrition, quality assurance principles and DNV regulations preferred.
