What are the responsibilities and job description for the Garden Caretaker (Temporary) position at Green Chimneys?
As a member of the farm department, the Brewster Campus Garden Caretaker is responsible for developing and maintaining all aspects of the Brewster garden and greenhouse program in support of an education program for emotionally fragile children with learning disabilities. The incumbent must maintain the educational garden, some flowerbeds and planters around campus as well as the campus greenhouse. Must have a broad understanding of how horticulture activity programming affects different populations in education, therapy and recreation. The incumbent serves as garden intern supervisor, supervises volunteers and supports the garden teacher in the planning of activities and supervising tasks with students.
Physical/Mental Requirements (ADA Compliance):
- In order to perform the essential duties of the job, the incumbent must be able to speak, hear, see, type and drive.
- Must have the ability to work long hours, in a hectic environment, often under pressure and outdoors in all variety of weather conditions.
- Mental requirements include, but are not necessarily limited to, the ability to concentrate, take initiative, cope with stress, adapt to and stay alert in a fast-paced business environment.
- Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. regularly
- Must have the stamina and ability to physically work eight consecutive hours or sometimes more in a garden/greenhouse, including but not necessarily limited to digging soil, weeding, carting material, lifting pots, mulching beds, moving compost etc.
- Must be able to bend, kneel and stoop; sometimes for extended periods
The rate of pay is $17.00 per hour.
