ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD INSPECTOR/ PROJECT MONITOR

Job Description

GEC seeks a full-time employee to perform environmental field work with an eagerness to grow and learn.

Initial duties include asbestos project monitoring and asbestos inspections. Under the mentoring and management of senior level staff, future duties may include indoor air quality (IAQ) inspections, mold evaluations, lead paint sampling, and other industrial hygiene sampling. The candidate will be the face of the company, interacting directly with clients, contractors and regulators.

Candidates should be ambitious, independent, and reliable. To perform job duties, successful candidates should be physically able to lift heavy objects (50 pounds), climb ladders, and enter crawlspaces and attics. Candidates should also have a valid drivers license and a reliable vehicle for traveling to project sites throughout western Massachusetts.

This is a full-time position with wages commensurate with experience. Work hours are generally Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and include travel throughout western Massachusetts. Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work is required. No overnight travel is expected.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform asbestos project monitoring and air sampling for asbestos abatement activities
  • Perform asbestos inspections
  • Collect air and bulk samples for asbestos, mold, radon and other regulated materials
  • Prepare chains-of-custody and submit samples to laboratory for analysis
  • Calibrate, use, and maintain field equipment such as microscopes, air pumps, and IAQ monitors
  • Perform on-site analysis of asbestos air samples
  • Provide written documentation and summary reports for asbestos project monitoring and inspection reports.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology or related science field with 0-1 year of relevant professional experience; or two years of college credit, an associate degree, or technical degree with 4-6 years of professional experience
  • Valid drivers license, clean driving record, transportation, and willingness to travel
  • Ability to use field equipment, wear a respirator, and perform duties with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Capable of working collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision
  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination including clearance to wear a respirator

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current MA Asbestos Inspector and/or MA Project Monitor license(s)
  • NIOSH-582 course or equivalent
  • OSHA 10-hour training
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER training
  • Working knowledge of AHERA, MassDEP, and MA DLS asbestos regulations
  • Database experience using Claris FileMaker Pro software
  • Proficiency with Apple products
  • Previous field work experience in indoor air quality, mold, or lead-based paint
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA, EPA, and state regulations for other hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of building science

Pay: $22.00 - $30.00 per hour
