JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Residential Rear-Loader Driver
PURPOSE: To drive a rear-loader truck on residential routes to collect and transport solid waste to transfer station for disposal.
Responsible for physically loading waste. Responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously serving customers.
1. Performs daily pre- and post-trip inspections.
Completes and submits the vehicle condition report at the end of the shift.
Walk around visual inspection to check for water, oil, fuel and hydraulic system leaks. Inspects safety equipment, gauges, fluid levels and checks to ensure that all equipment and systems are operational. After startup, checks gauges and controls.
Knowledge of the truck and its components and the basic maintenance requirements for safe operation. Ability to read and write well enough to complete vehicle condition reports on phone or tablet.
Walking, bending, crouching, climbing, visually inspecting around and under the truck and its components.
Will be Outdoors in all weather conditions.
2. Drives the rear-load truck along Computer Routed rural and urban residential routes to collect waste and when the truck is full, to the Transfer Station for Dumping the Truck.
Drives a heavy diesel rear-load truck. Frequent stops. Climbs in and out of truck cab, as needed, to help load residential and commercial waste.
Must meet the following requirements: 1) B CDL,with Air Brakes 2) One year or equivalent commercial truck driving experience, and 3) in the most recent 36 month period, as verified by a current MVR/driver abstract:
a. no more than one moving violation or accident,
b. no suspensions or revocations due to a moving violation or accident, and
c. no DUI (driving under the influence) convictions.
Must be able to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment.
Must have or be able to attain a valid DOT medical card. Sufficient stamina for driving a heavy truck, equipped with an automatic transmission, climbing in and out of the truck cab to assist in loading residential waste.
Grasping, gripping controls. Able to work utilizing safety equipment, including hearing protection, work shoes, utility gloves, reflective vest, and safety glasses.
Workday varies from 6-12 hours, depending on route type, day of the week, and seasonal variations.
Summer schedule typically requires 45-50 hours per week. Winter schedule is typically 40-48 hours per week.
Working Conditions are Outdoors and in an air conditioned/heated truck cab, all weather conditions.
Assists in physically loading waste. Responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously serving customers.
Courteously interacts with customers and/or the general public along the route to answer questions or respond to requests. Notifies supervisor of issues requiring management action.
Face-to-face interactions. May radio information to GES dispatcher or refer the customer to an appropriate GES contact person.
Able to learn and use interpersonal skills relating to good customer service, such as the principles taught in the GES customer service.
Cleans waste from the cab and truck body on each transfer station visit. This ensures that equipment operations will continue safely and productively.
Mechanically empties truck body at Transfer Station.
Must be able to follow safe operating practices, including lock out/tag out procedures to ensure truck is inoperative when working in the truck body.
Reads the route sheet/Computer tablet to determine the day’s assignment and special service instructions. Makes notes as required.
Ability to read, write, and comprehend the components of the route sheet well enough to complete daily assignments.
