General Educator Job Description-

A new therapeutic school, located in Newport, Vt, is seeking an elementary grades general educator. This program will serve students with academic and behavioral challenges- serving up to 8 elementary aged students. The program will offer individualized,small group learning in a developmentally appropriate, therapeutic learning environment for students whose needs cannot be met in their home schools.

Preferred candidates will have knowledge and experience with current best practices in elementary education, proficiency-based learning, technology integration skills, differentiation and inclusion.

This person will be responsible for being an active member of a team and must be willing to work in an interdisciplinary manner- working with Behavioral Clinicians, a Special Educator and Behavior Therapists. This person will collaborate on serving students with Specific Learning Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Other Health Impairment, and Emotional Disturbance.

Ideal candidates will be responsible for planning and implementing instruction for students that are in alignment with state standards and proficiencies, will co-plan with the Special Educator around modifying and accommodating work in an accessible manner for students, and for implementing periodic assessments.

Interwoven throughout our programming are components of Applied Behavior Analysis, trauma-informed perspective, and restorative practices. We believe that by taking this approach, we can provide students an academic experience where they feel successful and supported, in an environment that fosters inclusion, embodies radical acceptance, and de-stigmatizes educational gaps and differences in individual abilities, styles, and approaches to learning.

Job Description:

  • Plan and implement lessons utilizing Proficiency Based Grading Rubrics in the format of Project Based Learning
  • Deliver lessons to students 4 days a week in their designated content area, delivering instruction in the model of Project Based Learning
  • Utilize and implement formative and summative assessments to determine student progress
  • Record student growth, progress, and work completion
  • Collect data on and measure: student attendance, student participation and engagement and student progress related to academic programming
  • Utilize the designated platform to record grades, award credit and to generate quarterly reports
  • Direction and oversight of support staff in implementing/administering instructional support for/with students
  • Support students in completing IXL and Star 360 assessments Quarterly
  • Complete Quarterly reports- provide information per data collection, assessment and progress measures
  • Be an active participant in student team meetings
  • Join IEP and 504 team meetings for students
  • To team and co-teach with Special Educator to deliver accommodated and modified work which meets each student’s IEP goals
  • To team with Behavior Therapist, Behavior Analyst and Therapist around implementing interventions within the classroom setting to promote student success
  • Abide by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the HIPAA requirements regarding confidentiality and the maintenance of educational records. TRA will also abide by the Special Education requirements regarding the destruction of educational records.
  • Willingness to be trained and learn new information.
  • Overall, demonstrate a positive and compassionate attitude, in line with GMBC and The Expansion Program values and mission.
  • To attend all staff meetings, designated professional development and in-service trainings as outlined in the Expansion Program calendar
  • Support or complete credit assignment and transcript completion
  • Complete written lesson plans to be stored at designated locations, and to be shared when requested, including standards used for planning purposes, outlines, assessments, etc.
  • To attend work per the employee handbook (to be in the building at 7:45am each day)
  • To determine state standards to address throughout instruction
  • To collaborate and coordinate the planning and delivery of general education during the 5 week Extended School Year, this includes co-creating a project that addresses all four core content areas (attendance of all 5 weeks is not mandatory nor expected, it is expected that you are in attendance for some of the time). To support/complete grading and credit assignment with regards to summer general education
  • To collaborate and coordinate with the other general and special education staff to determine ESY coverage
  • As needed, plan and implement the delivery of additional skills instruction (health, life skills, etc)
  • As needed, to provide students with additional support or time
  • Other duties as assigned by the CEO and/or Director

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in either Early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, applied behavior analysis, or a related field.
  • A willingness to take Praxis I and II if necessary
  • Has obtained or working toward teaching licensure

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
