The Part Time Intensive English Program (IEP) Advisor will collaborate with the Director and other members of the International Programs (IP) department, as well as the broader College community, to implement an advising program designed to support intentional curricular planning, student goal achievement, and retention.

The IEP Advisor will provide direct advising services to IEP students, managing a designated caseload within the International Programs. This role is integral to supporting recruitment efforts and enhancing student retention to meet the enrollment objectives of the College.

This position primarily requires in-person presence at Green River College.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical students, 15% Adult Basic Education student, and 3% Applied Bachelor degrees.  Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, Washington, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw.  Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

  • Provide comprehensive advising and support to Intensive English Program (IEP) students in areas such as cultural adjustment, academic planning, personal development, housing, immigration, and health-related concerns.
  • Administer and enforce the IEP attendance and absence policy.
  • Collaborate with International Programs and Extended Learning (IPEL) and other Green River College departments to promote student engagement and encourage participation in both on-campus and off-campus events and activities.
  • Assist IEP students in transitioning to academic programs, providing guidance and support throughout the process.

Administrative Functions (IP Advising)
  • Oversee coordination with the Intensive English Program (IEP) to facilitate student transitions and manage test-out processes.
  • Lead collaboration with the International Student College Experience (ISCE – IP099) program to support first-quarter transition outcomes.
  • Plan, organize, and monitor student preregistration processes and pre-arrival communications to ensure a seamless onboarding experience.
  • Participate in college committees as requested and represent the department in both internal and external contexts, as needed.

Other Duties
  • Collaborate with units within International Programs and Extended Learning (IPEL) to enhance and refine Green River College's international advising program.
  • Assist IPEL staff with the promotion and marketing of the College's educational programs and services to students, international agents, and organizations.
  • Participate in campus meetings as needed.
  • Perform occasional evening and weekend duties as required.
  • Undertake additional related responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience living abroad or studying abroad
  • Demonstrated intercultural competency
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and build relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams
  • Experience working in a secondary or post-secondary educational setting
  • Ability to provide comprehensive international student advising: cultural, academic, personal, employment, immigration, health
  • Ability to interpret academic degree requirements, academic policies and procedures to facilitate student academic progress
  • Experience in marketing, recruitment, outreach, or admission
  • Ability to use and learn appropriate technology including MS Office and social media
  • Ability to work within legal and ethical guidelines for WA state higher education institutions
  • Attention to detail and good follow through
  • Effective interpersonal and project management skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with little downtime

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Fluency in a language other than English
  • Experience advising international students on immigration regulations
  • Experience working in a community college

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Special Certification:
  • Must meet the Department of Homeland Securities requirements for registration as a Designated School Official (DSO) with the Department of Homeland Security; DSO and Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) training required within three months of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Must have the ability to sit for prolonged period of time at a desk/computer workstation
  • Frequent repetitive arm, hand, and finger motions
  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screen in performing work assignments
  • Work in an office setting with frequent interruptions
