Job Responsibilities
- Copy edit stories and graphics. This includes checking facts and math, fixing grammar and spelling errors, rewording for voice and clarity, and enforcing style rules.
- Contact editors or reporters for questions on stories.
- Close newsletters and organize distribution emails.
- Create, update or modify Word tables and Excel charts to follow style guidelines.
- Transfer information from the database team into Word documents for rankings, etc.
- In time, learn the layout editor’s job.
Manager Responsibilities
- Write year-end and mid-year reviews for production team members.
- Provide direction for team members, such as assigning newsletter oversight, scheduling a copy editor to work late for Canada articles and getting the layout editor involved in new designs.
- Train team members on new duties, or direct them to training guides.
- Approve team members’ requests for time off.
- Run the weekly production meeting.
- Represent the team at other meetings (editors meeting, style meeting, news leadership meeting, etc.).
- Take the lead when necessary to request technological assistance.
- Communicate important department issues with the editor in chief and the executive editor.
Requirements
- Five-plus years of relevant experience in journalism, including at least 3 as an editor or copy editor.
- Experience at managing a team is a plus.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with Word and Excel are preferred. Experience with Adobe InDesign is also a plus but not required.
- Authorization to work in the United States now and in the future, without visa or sponsorship requirements.
