Salary: Step 0, Lane BA: $50,000 minimum, $62,000 minimum for 12 years of experience
Job Summary:
The High School English Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and standards-based instruction in English Language Arts (ELA) to high school students. This includes teaching literature, composition, grammar, and critical thinking skills while fostering a love for reading and writing. The teacher will create a supportive learning environment, assess student progress, and collaborate with colleagues to ensure student success.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum Development:
- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with Iowa Core Standards.
- Teach literature, writing, grammar, and communication skills across various grade levels.
- Incorporate diverse texts and instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
- Utilize technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance student learning.
- Differentiate instruction to support students with varying abilities, including those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans.
Student Assessment & Support:
- Evaluate student progress through formative and summative assessments.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress to students and parents.
- Identify struggling students and implement interventions to support their learning needs.
Classroom Management & Student Engagement:
- Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies that promote student responsibility and engagement.
- Encourage critical thinking, discussion, and collaboration among students.
Collaboration & Professional Development:
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to align curriculum and share best practices.
- Participate in school committees, staff meetings, and professional learning communities (PLCs).
- Engage in professional development opportunities to stay current with educational best practices.
- Communicate effectively with parents, administrators, and other stakeholders regarding student progress and school initiatives.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Supervise students in extracurricular activities, clubs, or school events as needed.
- Uphold school policies, ethical standards, and professional conduct.
- Assist with standardized testing, graduation requirements, and student support programs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field.
- Valid Iowa teaching license with an endorsement in English/Language Arts (5-12).
- Experience teaching high school English preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Work Environment:
- Works primarily in a classroom setting within a high school.
- May involve occasional evening or weekend commitments for school events or parent meetings.
