Job Summary:
The High School Counselor provides academic, career, social-emotional, and college readiness support to students. This role involves working closely with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to foster a positive and supportive learning environment that promotes student success.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Support:
- Assist students in course selection and scheduling.
- Monitor academic progress and develop intervention plans for struggling students.
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to address academic concerns.
- Provide guidance on credit requirements and graduation eligibility.
Career and College Readiness:
- Assist students in developing post-secondary plans, including college, career, and technical education options.
- Support students in college applications, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
- Provide career exploration resources and assessments.
- Organize college fairs, job shadowing, and internship opportunities.
Social-Emotional Support:
- Provide individual and group counseling to support student well-being.
- Address behavioral and emotional concerns through appropriate interventions.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external agencies to support students in crisis.
- Implement social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives.
Student Advocacy and Collaboration:
- Serve as a liaison between students, families, school staff, and community resources.
- Promote a safe and inclusive school environment.
- Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plan meetings as needed.
- Support anti-bullying and conflict resolution programs.
Administrative Duties:
- Maintain student records and documentation in compliance with school policies.
- Adhere to state and district counseling standards and ethical guidelines.
- Participate in professional development and continuing education.
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives related to student wellness and success.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field.
- Valid Iowa Department of Education School Counselor License.
- Experience working with high school students preferred.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of college and career readiness programs and resources.
Work Environment:
- Primarily works in a school setting.
- May require occasional evening or weekend events for parent meetings, college fairs, or student activities.
