The entry level class works under general supervision and requires considerable knowledge of safety practices - veterinary practices; office practices and procedures; natural science - veterinary medicine, animal biology, pharmacology; state & county laws, regulations policies & procedures governing sheltered animals and kennel operations.

HOURS OF WORK : Part-time; 56 hours bi-weekly; flex schedule, based on the needs of the Department. Core hours are Monday - Friday; 8 : 00am - 4 : 30pm.

Duties / Responsibilities

Performs physical & routine laboratory examinations on animals as required. Determines condition, illness, injury, disease, shock or trauma. Administers injections and oral and intravenous medication or inoculations, applies wound dressings and prescribed treatment to animals as directed by a veterinarian or according to established protocols. Records animal's medical history, diet, weight, medication and medical treatment on charts, forms, reports and computer records. Prepares vaccines and serums. Consults with licensed veterinarian concerning routine & non-routine animal health care treatment and care. Coordinates follow up care between veterinarian and staff. Assists in the determination of euthanasia. Performs and assists in the euthanasia process. Monitors inventory levels and orders animal food, vaccines, pharmaceuticals and other animal care supplies and equipment.

Monitors health and well-being of sheltered animals. Advises and instructs staff concerning special diets and feeding, any and all medical care treatments and medication dispensing, proper methods to restrain, house animals, and transmission and prevention of animal diseases. Assists in selection of animals. Provides counseling and care instructions under the general supervision of the licensed veterinarian. Cleans, disinfects and maintains all kenneling areas in the veterinary clinic and throughout the facility. Performs routine kenneling duties including feeding and watering as needed to support animal care staff, assists in field with investigations and evaluations.

Assist the administrative staff with office duties such as license sales, owner releases and redemption, adoptions, and phone and dispatch duties as assigned by the director. Works with the public in areas of adoption, lost pet search, behavior and health issues. Receives and retrieves calls from the public, consults with licensed veterinarian and responds / returns messages.

Performs others duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of Associates degree or training program under Ohio Revised Code 4741.01(F) and 955.16; Licensed as Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Ohio, and 24 mos. of experience as a Veterinary Technician in an animal clinic or animal shelter; valid Ohio Driver's License.

Biennial renewal of licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS :

Predictable and regular attendance is required.

Travel may be required.

Subject to rotating shifts and / or week-end work schedules; exposed to weather (e.g. hot, cold, rain, snow), exposed to pet dander, physical violence and infectious animal bites.

Stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
