What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full-Time Hatchery Assitant and Farm Hand position at Greenfire Farms?
Greenfire Farms is a renowned farm and hatchery specializing in the preservation of rare and exotic chicken breeds from around the world. Our mission is to be responsible stewards of these rare breeds, educate the public on poultry conservation, and ensure the continued vitality of rare and heritage chicken breeds. We pride ourselves on ethical breeding practices and work to maintain a diverse range of birds that are both beautiful and productive. Our farm has legally imported over 40 different chicken breeds into the United States and has worked with the Livestock Conservancy to bring attention to rare breeds and the importance of preserving them. Greenfire Farms is a main driving force behind making rare chicken breeds available in the United States. We have increased our flock sizes significantly over the last few years and our small team is interested in adding a few more "chicken tenders" to the crew.
We are looking for a reliable full-time employee to work 40 hours per week with starting pay at $15 per hour. The hours would be 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. You will need to work 2 weekend shifts (1 Saturday and 1 Sunday) every 4 weeks and you will receive additional compensation for these shifts. You will be able to sign up for the weekend shifts well in advance so the shifts align with your schedule. We can discuss this further during the interview.
We are looking for someone to join our team who is a fast learner, detail oriented, can follow instructions effectively, and has a willingness to learn new things. You will be responsible for learning all of the chicken breeds that we have at the farm at different stages of their life: as chicks, juveniles, and as adults. In order to mesh with the team you will need to learn the breeds quickly.
The main responsibilities will be, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with packing and shipping chick and egg orders
- Assisting with flock management and maintenance
- Helping with candling, as well as collecting eggs
- Cleaning items used in the incubation and hatching process and cleaning chicken pens
- Feeding the chickens
- Various organizational tasks
Some of the tasks that will be your responsibility will take place outdoors so you must be comfortable working in Florida’s weather conditions. Please note that this is a farm, and candidates should be prepared for hands-on work in potentially messy conditions. Appropriate work attire, such as waterproof shoes and rain jackets, is recommended. You must also be able to lift 50 lbs and are comfortable working around chickens. We don’t require that you have previous experience working on a farm or with chickens, but we would like that you have some amount of animal experience before applying. Previous experience working outdoors is preferred but not required. Reliable transportation is a must.
For biosecurity reasons if you have chickens or other fowl currently or work or volunteer with chickens or other fowl, please do not apply. We do not want to risk transmission of disease to our farm. Thank you for understanding. Smoking is not allowed on premises, so if you are a smoker please do not apply. We will run a background check as well. We would love to have someone join our team who is interested in learning about the rare chicken breeds that we raise. If you think you would make a great fit and are interested in becoming a “chicken tender”, please send us your resume!
