Description

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Assistant Director of Public Safety and Security shall perform the duties of the Director of Public Safety and Security during the absence of the Director and oversee operational functions of the department, serve as command staff, and provide input on department services and operations for Public Safety and Security Officers. The Assistant Director for Campus Safety and Security is responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and management of campus safety and security programs, environmental health, fire safety, emergency management, and parking management; focused on community and campus engagement.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of federal mandates and requirements of VAWA, Clery and other elements of higher education required by the Department of Education; assist in compiling statistical information and the disclosure of crime statistics for the College’s Annual Security Report in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act.
  • Supervise and develop department staff, facilitating professional opportunities to improve the individual capability of officers and the management of each officer’s performance.
  • Coordinate and plan special events, dignitary visits and other large scale campus activities. 
  • Manage the distribution of safety literature to Students, Faculty and Staff. Assist with the operation of the campus Emergency Notification System.
  • Ensure that all department equipment is maintained in good, safe working condition and schedule repairs of equipment in need of service. Maintenance of all files, records, incident, and fire/alarm reports. Coordinate the distribution of these reports to proper departments and personnel for corrective action.
  • Maintain all purchasing records and serve as scheduler for the uniform, fire safety and auto repair vendors, respectively. Serve as liaison to local law enforcement with focus on the areas of Campus Safety.
  • Be familiar with all buildings and college property. Update and coordinate with the Director of Public Safety and Security, all revisions pertaining to parking and security literature, review safety issues and concerns, be familiar with the responsibilities of a Campus Safety & Security Officer and be knowledgeable of all department policies, procedures, and College regulations.
  • Collaborate with student organizations and leadership to address safety issues, programs, and personnel issues.
  • Knowledge of advanced law enforcement methods; community policing methods and techniques.
  • Supervise and assist in medical emergencies, fire evacuation, severe weather, campus lockdowns, bomb threats, and exercise drills.
  • Ensure monitoring of all campus facilities for trespassing of individuals on campus during and after business hours.
  • Supervise regular physical inspections of grounds, buildings, equipment, and operations; identify hazards and incidents of regulatory non-compliance and recommend corrective actions.
  • Supervise the surveillance of suspected illegal and/or unauthorized activities.
  • Supervise and direct the security of on-campus student and community held activities.
  • Attend classes and workshops on safety and security; conduct on the job training for campus safety personnel, students, and staff.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications


SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field and/or 5 years of federal, state, municipal or college experience at a command staff level; the rank of captain or higher preferred.
  • Experience in a higher education public safety or campus police department civil, or institutional security, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • North Carolina Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate or eligibility for award.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina with no previous convictions other than minor traffic violations.   
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills and possess mature judgment.
  • Must possess applicable certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Commission or the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Division or obtain such certification within one year.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Crawling, Reaching, Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, Fingering, Grasping, and Repetitive Motions. Possess visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned. Activities occur both inside and outside, subject to both environmental conditions. Subject to noise, vibrations, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
  • Must have vision correctable and able to meet the color vision requirements listed by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission
