Job Description:
The Produce Department Assistant is part of the fresh produce department and essential to assist the Produce Department Manager to achieve sales, profit margins, promotions, and maintain the department in the best way possible for customers.
Starting wage $16.11/hr
Essential Functions of all GreenTree Co-op Market Positions:
- Customer service - Provides friendly, inclusive, respectful, helpful customer service by projecting an approachable presence, greeting and thanking each customer. Responds promptly and knowledgeably to customer questions about Co-op policies and products and refers customers to other employees/resources as needed.
- Appearance - Wears the GreenTree Co-op Market required uniform of the department as to be identifiable to customers and maintains the uniform in professional, clean, and orderly appearance. Keeps work areas clean, organized and sanitary.
- Safety - Works efficiently and in a safe manner, following safety procedures.
- Work Ethic - Takes initiative and works as part of a team. Asks coworkers for assistance as needed and provides help as needed.
- Continues to learn and develop knowledge of the position, co-op, and industry.
- Demonstrates regular and dependable attendance.
- Follows all department and store SOPs.
- Able to clearly explain how Co-op Ownership functions, promotes Ownership and the benefits of becoming a Co-op Owner.
Essential Functions of the Assistant Produce Manager:
I. PERSONNEL AND TEAMWORK
· Coaches, reviews, recommends development goals, mentors, and addresses performance issues in a timely manner for department staff, as assigned.
· Oversees training of staff on regular duties, safety, and standards, as needed.
· Ensures department staff members adhere to all policies and procedures.
· Assists in team building and identifies ways to improve or maintain team morale.
· Collaborates with other departments on merchandising, space allocations, and equipment usage.
· Provides constructive feedback to supervisor, co-workers, and peers.
· Communicates to staff using Basecamp; regularly checks Basecamp for updates.
II. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
- Customer Service – can answer all departmental questions accurately, including product locations, seasonality, local items, sales periods, sales items, processes special orders, and retrieves special orders for customers. Handles unplanned situations calmly and in alignment with Co-op policies. Models exceptional customer service skills and communicates with coworkers professionally.
- Oversees - Assists in maintaining and educating staff on the department, may participate in periodic staff reviews.
- Helps coordinate staff on tasks and projects during slow periods.
- Assists in hiring qualified people as needed, attends department meetings with staff as necessary, covers when short staffed, for breaks, or as needed.
- Ensures correct assortment and quality of produce in all locations and across departments for optimal synergy and sales.
- Maintains accurate orders by analyzing sales data, trends, requests, and seasonality. Helps plan department promotions and participates in store promotions.
- Assists in performing resets, maintaining a clean and appealing department including coolers and displays, and participates in quarterly inventory.
- Works with marketing to ensure correct signage and promotion of products, coordinates and maintains storage of products.
- Assists in bundling, packaging, bagging, washing, trimming, and stocking produce. Correctly culls, writes off, and disposes of subpar product.
- IT - Troubleshoot issues with the POS and scanners as needed, inputs pricing changes, maintains updated list of PLUs and seasonal items, maintains POS system data.
- Conducts regular price comparisons with nearby competitor stores and takes needed action(s) to refine margin strategy.
- Understands differences between conventional and organic farming practices. Understands retail practices for both organic and conventional items.
- Proficient with email, Microsoft Word, and possesses basic Excel skills.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by Produce Department Manager or General Manager.
Additional Qualifications:
· Full-time, various hours including nights, weekends, and some holidays.
Experience:
- Required: Attention to detail and accuracy
- Preferred: At least 6 months' managing or buying in a fresh department
- Preferred: Experience in POS systems
- Preferred: Experience in a busy retail environment
- Preferred: Knowledge of GreenTree Co-op Market’s product offerings
Skills:
- Required: Demonstrated customer service skills, including ability to project friendly, outgoing presence
- Required: Ability to self-direct and prioritize tasks
- Required: Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Required: Demonstrate initiative, leadership skills, and strategic thinking

- Preferred: Knowledge on natural, organic, Fair Trade, GMOs/Bioengineered, etc.
- Preferred: Demonstrated ability to deal respectfully with challenging people
- Preferred: Demonstrated ability to work well with others in fast-paced team environment
Essential Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- Prolonged moving on the sales floor
- Ability to perform continuous fine work and gripping with hands
- Able to read small print
- Frequent reaching, bending, twisting, and rotating
- Ability to lift 30lbs repeatedly, up to 50lbs occasionally
- Ability to work outdoors, sometimes under extreme temperature and weather conditions
- Ability to move around the sales floor and parking areas efficiently and safely
- Ability to operate equipment including phone system, computer system, and box cutters
- Regular exposure to common food allergens
