What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Music Ministries position at Greenville United Methodist Church?
The Director of Music Ministries is employed by the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) of the Greenville United Methodist Church.
Purpose: To provide oversight and direct all music programs within the church. The director shall be a spiritual, mature, and experienced individual committed to Jesus Christ and to ministry through music.
Relationships:
1. The director shall function as a member of the church staff.
2. The director shall work under the Pastor’s supervision and cooperation with other church staff.
3. The director shall have direct access to the SPRC (Staff Parish Relations Committee) as their supervising body and shall have a yearly review of job performance.
4. The director shall attend the quarterly meetings of the Administrative Council.
Job Requirements/Functions:
1. The director must possess the administrative skills necessary to perform the duties described below.
2. The director shall constantly oversee, administrate, evaluate, implement, instruct, and publicize established and potential music programs. These programs include, but are not limited to:
a. Wednesday evening activities: Practice Adult Chancel choir (and when appropriate, upcoming cantata’s).
b. Sunday Music program activities
c. Ensure that the Christmas, Easter, Christmas Eve, and Maundy Thursday music programs/performances are planned and implemented (and any other special services if requested by the pastor)
d. Coordinate piano, organist and other instruments as needed.
e. Ensure that all church pianos and church organ are tuned and serviced as needed
f. Direct congregational singing at worship services
g. Consult with the pastor, choir and congregation on the type of music to select and/or purchase as appropriate
h. Strive to recruit new choir members for regular as well as special performances (cantatas, etc.)
i. Coordinate with audio/visual technician to ensure that music within worship services or other special gatherings is setup appropriately
j. At the discretion of the pastor, play the pianos and/or organ for weddings and funerals (it is appropriate for the director to assess and accept payment for these voluntary services)
3. Budget
a. The director shall be responsible to keep within the budget set by the Admin Council and shall work with the appropriate committees to submit a yearly budget to the finance committee for approval that will adequately cover the cost for implementing a viable music.
b. The Finance Committee will supervise the financial aspects of the music ministries.
Office Hours:
1. The director is a part-time position
2. The director is required to be at the Church for Sunday morning and Wednesday evening activity.
3. Other office time to be determined in consultation with the pastor
4. The director should work with the Pastor for any replacements should he/she be absent for Sunday morning service.
Benefits:
1. Pay Raises
a. Pay considerations are determined in October and effective from January – December of the following year
b. To receive any pay raise granted by the SPRC, the director must be employed for a full year and meeting the expectations of the job description.
2. Probationary Period
a. The director will be hired for an initial three-month probationary period; a mandatory job performance review will occur at the end of this three-month period;
b. If this review is favorable the director will be re-employed for another three-month period.
c. If the mandatory review at the end of six months is favorable, the SPRC committee would then declare the probationary employment period concluded and offer continued employment for the director subject to a once-a-year performance review.

Pay: $10,000.00 - $15,000.00 per year
