The department of Social Sciences at Greenville University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Equine Studies with a focus on Equine Assisted Services (EAS). This position will work in collaboration with our agribusiness, horsemanship, psychology, and social work faculty to create a holistic equine studies program incorporating EAS.
EAS is a unifying term that captures services where someone who is a professional in both fields of mental health and equine with experience in incorporating equine to benefit people in a therapeutic triad (client-horse-therapist).
It is critical that this candidate can incorporate into their curriculum a clinical knowledge of therapeutic service, equine, and effective horse–human interaction management. These will be implemented within the greater context of holistic care while managing the therapeutic alliances therein.
The successful candidate will provide an experiential learning environment that is innovative and relevant. The selected candidate must provide evidence of a vibrant Christian faith, clearly understand, and internalize the mission of Greenville University, and articulate the value of Christian higher education. The primary foci are teaching excellence and mission alignment. In cooperation with other faculty in the department and college, the candidate will develop and deliver innovative courses at the undergraduate level. The modality is primarily in-person initially, with online and hybrid modalities to be developed and maintained as well. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, engagement in community and professional groups, and serving on university committees. A passion for working with undergraduate students in the Christian higher education setting is essential.
Position Requirements
- Ability to perform teaching, administrative, and clerical duties independently in order to fulfill goals and objectives of the program within the overall mission of the University.
- Teaching experience at a higher education institution is preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development, strong work ethic, and a commitment to working well with others.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with integrating instructional technology into classroom experiences.
- Contribute to further develop current and future programs.
- Operate computer technologies relevant to the discipline to cover face to face, hybrid, and on-line course formats.
- Supervise and advise students, praying for them and helping them in their academic and spiritual formation.
- Engage in department and campus service activities, including committee work as assigned.
- Participate in professional development, including grant writing.
- Assist with recruiting and marketing activities to build student awareness of the major, as well as student retention efforts.
- Commit to the development and execution of experiential learning opportunities. Including building relationships with equine therapy centers, nonprofits, and mental health organizations to provide students with networking opportunities and placements for hands-on experience.
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to relate complex concepts to diverse audiences, and demonstrated cultural competency, through providing students the opportunity to directly engage with horses
- Work with accrediting bodies to ensure the program meets educational standards for certification and licensure, such as those set by organizations like PATH Intl. or EAGALA.
- Hands-On Learning: Provide opportunities for students to engage directly with horses during classes or practicums, including supervised riding, grooming, or ground-based activities.
Requirements
- Professional experience in the equine industry.
- Experience in college-level teaching and scholarship is highly desired.
- The successful candidate will have content expertise and teaching passion to develop the creative minds of undergraduate students in the discipline within a Christian worldview.
- Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or a related field. A master’s degree in counseling with significant professional experience will also be considered. Desirable: At least 18 graduate credits in Equine Studies or related discipline.
- Licensing/Certification: Licensure as a license professional clinical counselor (LCPC), psychologist (PhD or PsyD), or marriage and family therapist (LMFT), or LCSW with a license or ability to quickly obtain license in the state of Illinois and/ or Colorado.
- PATH Certification in Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI, Advanced, Master) is required.
- The role can be physically demanding, as it may involve working outdoors, riding horses, and providing hands-on care. It may also require lifting equipment, feeding, and grooming the horses.

Salary Range: $48,700-$58,000/ Annually. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions and department budget.
