Your Role as a School Nurse
- Health Record Management & Compliance
Reviews and obtains health records to ensure accuracy and compliance. Ensures all students have the required physicals. Develops and implements student Health Care Plans. - Health Assessment & Communication
Interprets a student’s health status to instructional teams and administrators. Provides ongoing health assessments and communicates concerns to parents. Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual student needs. - School Health Protocols & Emergency Management
Develops, monitors, and implements school health management protocols. Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries and illnesses. Promotes information and assists in the control of communicable diseases. - Health Education & Staff Training
Provides health education to students and families. Serves as a resource to teachers and instructional teams regarding health instruction. Provides staff training in basic first aid, EpiPen use, disease prevention, and CPR. - Collaboration & Team Participation
Participates in IEP plan development and attends team meetings as needed. Member of the Internal Review Board to support health-related decisions. - Medication Administration & Compliance
Develops and implements medication administration policies and procedures. Manages all OTC and prescription medications for students, ensuring state standards and documentation are followed. Ensures all doctor’s orders and expiration dates of medications are up to date. Contacts doctors’ offices when needed to update orders or clarify prescriptions. Obtains parent permission and release forms for any contact with healthcare staff. - Regulatory & Compliance Standards
Maintains all elements of healthcare standards for school nurses as described by DOE.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
- Must hold a valid Connecticut State nursing license and state certification.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with students, staff, and parents.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, and parents, fostering a supportive learning environment.
