Position Summary
The Billing Specialist is responsible for preparing and submitting billing data to insurances and ensuring that claims are accurate and complete. Follow up denials and submit appeals for payment. Coordinate with appropriate clinic staff to resolve discrepancies with coding, patient demographics and insurance information.
Responsibilities
- Review billing queue for accuracy; correct any pre-edits before processing claims
- Resolve any insurance and clearinghouse rejections in a timely manner
- Coordinate with front desk staff to resolve registration issues
- Ensure proper authorizations are obtained
- Investigate insurance denials/EOB’s and perform follow up on unpaid claims
- Submit corrected claims and appeals as necessary for claims resolution
- Resolve client billing inquiries
- Keep clinic informed of any updated changes to billing regulations/policies
- Provides financial counseling to clients. Responsible for discussion of financial options, payment plans, one-time settlements and resolution of unpaid balances.
- Monitor patient accounts; conduct income/work verification; enforce compliance with fee agreement, If a client is unable to comply with agreement, has the discretion to accept alternate payment terms subject to review and approval by the Director of RCM
- Communicate billing trends/discrepancies to management
- Attend staff meetings and training as required
- Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned by the direct supervisor
Qualifications
- High School diploma/equivalent with at least 3 years experience in a medical setting
- Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT codes
- Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, Managed Care, Commercial and third-party billing
- Understand billing rules and regulations
- Proficient computer skills; Experience with Microsoft Office, EHR system, insurance portals
- Professional attitude, great customer service skills and work ethics
