Position Summary:
The Director of the Pottery Program is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the program and the spaces it occupies. This role oversees all aspects of the school's operations, including curriculum development, instructor hiring and training, student enrollment, financial management, and facility maintenance; as well as long-term strategic planning and execution related to fundraising, capital planning and vision-setting. The ideal candidate is a passionate advocate for the ceramic arts and community building, with a proven track record of leadership and administration. The Director is responsible for implementing a visionary approach to advancing Greenwich House’s mission through arts education and exhibitions to all sectors. This includes engaging new populations of students from diverse communities throughout NYC. At the same time the Director will work closely with staff and faculty on the embodiment of that mission in the day-to-day supervision of teams and programs within GHP spaces and beyond.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage and supervise program staff and faculty, including communication, evaluations, hiring, and disciplinary actions.
- Oversee the planning and organization of programs such as exhibitions, residencies, workshops, lectures, and special projects.
- Collaborate with key GH central services including Development, Facilities, Security and Marketing and Communications
- Manage program budgets, track expenses, and coordinate fundraising and financial efforts with relevant teams.
- Oversee and contribute to the development of curriculum, educational programs, workshops, and resources to enhance cultural literacy and arts education.
- Act as an ambassador to promote the pottery school's work, strengthening its brand within Greenwich House, the local community, and the broader ceramics community.
- Ensure program excellence and drive continuous quality improvements.
- Perform additional tasks and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with extensive knowledge of the arts, ceramics preferred, and a proven ability to foster community and drive organizational growth. They should possess entrepreneurial problem-solving skills and articulate a vision for enhancing the organization's role as a hub for arts education, creation, artist showcasing, and community engagement. The role requires a visionary approach to maintaining and advancing the organization’s reputation as a leader in the arts community.
- Advanced degree in ceramics, art education, business administration, or related field (MA/MFA preferred).
- Deep understanding of ceramics, including its history, techniques, and contemporary trends.
- Proven leadership and team management experience, including overseeing diverse staff groups and various stakeholders.
- Strong financial management, budgeting, and business acumen.
- Excellent organizational, time-management, and multitasking abilities.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and supervisory skills.
- Knowledge of curatorial and gallery operations.
- Fundraising and grant writing experience (preferred).
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and other relevant software.
