Food Service Assistant

 

Reports to: Director of Compliance

Dept./School: Child Nutrition                                                                        


Primary Purpose:

 

Provide assistance to the Food Services Director by obtaining an understanding of the daily operations of the child nutrition program. Assist and support in the planning and implementing of meals that meet the regulatory and nutritional requirements for students, promoting the development of sound nutritional practices, and maintaining a safe and sanitary environment.  
 
Establish and direct the processes involved in providing free and reduced lunch applications following United States Department of Agriculture and Texas Department of Agriculture guidelines for meal eligibility and reimbursement of federal funds. 
 
Qualifications: 
 
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree (preferred), or equivalent educational experience with academic major in food and nutrition, dietetics, home and consumer sciences, food service management, nutrition education, culinary arts, or related field. 
 
Special Knowledge/Skills: 
 
Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Skill in operating MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) 
Ability to interpret data
Ability to support in the implementation of policy and procedures
Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations
Knowledge of nutrition principles and guidelines
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Bilingual (preferred, not required)
 
 
 Child Nutrition Operations
1) Support and assist the Director of Child Nutrition in ensuring quality control and consistency in program operations. 
2) Provide assistance in all aspects of daily kitchen performance. 
3) Conduct support visits to each site within the district and follow up with guidance for implementation of recommended duties and responsibilities.
4) Conduct or assist with training programs for staff on food safety, nutrition, and other topics.
5) Communicate effectively with school staff, parents, and the community about the child nutrition program. 
 
Safety and Sanitation
5) Assist in ensuring food items are prepared and stored in a safe and hazard-free environment according to guidelines.
6) Support in the enforcement of standards involving cleanliness, health, and safety following health and safety codes and regulations.
7) Ensure cafeterias maintain a safe work environment and assist in correcting unsafe working conditions. 
8) Promote and model district safety protocols and emergency procedures. 
 
Policy, Reports, and Law
9) Assist in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines for food service programs.
10) Complle, maintain, and file reports, records, and other documents as required. 
11) Maintain data integrity by communicating with PEIMS Coordinator and other departments in the district. 
 
Personnel Management
12) Provide support regarding the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of staff members. 
13) Participate in ongoing training and support opportunities, and assist in the implementation of these requirements in order to ensure exemplary operation in child nutrition food service.

reaching/overhead reaching
Lifting: Frequent moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds)
Environment: Work inside in commercial kitchen environment; exposure to extreme hot and cold
temperatures, extreme humidity, noise, vibration, microwaves, biological hazards (bacteria, mold, fungi),
chemical hazards (fumes, vapors, gases), electrical hazards; work with hands in water; work around machinery
with moving parts; work on slippery surfaces
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
