What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Heavy Equipment Operator & Excavator position at Gregory Electric?
Position Overview:
The utility heavy equipment operator and excavator is semi-skilled in the construction, and repair of underground distribution systems. The position is based out of Columbia, SC, and travel is required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
The following duties and responsibilities are not all-inclusive and are subject to change. The position performs additional duties as requested to meet the priorities and ongoing needs of the organization.
- Safely work new construction, maintenance, and repair of de-energized underground distribution systems based off receiving and following directions
- Working knowledge of underground construction standards and installation
- Proficient operation of heavy equipment – Dump truck, backhoe, trenchers, and mini-excavators
- Able to identify different sizes and types of material for pre-assembly
- Possess working knowledge of rigging principles, and materials used in underground construction work
- Basic knowledge of techniques used for pulling underground utility lines
- Understand minimum approach distance, soil classifications, excavation, shoring and ladder requirements
- Understand heavy equipment set up, procedures, underground services, infrastructure, and duct banks
- Performs excavations of dirt, rock, concrete, and other materials using hand tools and power equipment
- Participate in random drug and alcohol testing that supports Gregory’s commitment to a drug-free workplace
Qualifications and Requirements:
To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Advanced ability to read and understand blueprints, work orders, instructions, and procedures
- Working knowledge of the Internet, email, iPad, use of company radio and industry related programs
- Proficiency in critical thinking, trouble shooting, and problem resolution
- Maintain and safely operate company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order
- General knowledge of OSHA standards and guidelines
- Capable of active listening and effective communication (written, verbal, and nonverbal)
- Requires self-motivation, organization, and prioritization management
- Adhere to Gregory Electric’s safety rules and company policies
Education Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Technical degree, 2-4 years’ field experience, extensive mechanical ability, or a combination of education and/or experience
- Certifications or experience preferred in the following areas:
- OSHA certifications
- CDL A (preferred) or the ability to obtain
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently lift and carry up to 60 pounds
- Able to properly inspect, wear and remove OSHA required personal protective equipment
- Accurately perform basic math calculations to include addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, and the use of measurements
- Capable of working in confined spaces
- Ability to perform overhead work requiring the full motion use of both hands/arms and securing 30 pounds
- Possess hand dexterity and strength to operate common hand and power tools
- Must be able to stand and walk on pavement/ground for prolonged periods of time
- Requires rigorous physical labor – climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, push or pull
Travel Requirements:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be fully insured according to South Carolina law
- Maintain a driving record with less than 6 points
- Ability to travel within Gregory Electric’s territory when required
- Ability to drive both automatic and standard transmission vehicles
- Proven ability to operate a vehicle safely and within legal and regulatory requirements
Work Environment:
- Some exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, ice, wind)
- Ability to work outdoors continuously for 8 to 16 hours per day
- Able to work overtime when requested
- Noise level is moderate to loud
