Responsibilities:

  • Plan, schedule, conduct, prepare, review, & coordinate transportation engineering work. Examples of work: engineering reports, plans, specifications, contract documents, project scopes, schedules, budgets, & estimates for minor/major projects. Example studies: TIAs, traffic forecasting, roundabout feasibility, ICE, parking, lighting, signal timing, SWAs, access management, operations, safety, BC & NPVs, intersections, & corridors.
  • Produce, check, interpret, & revise drawings/reports using traffic calculations & standards.
  • Assist in the management of projects.
  • Assist in resolving complex problems (e.g., conflicting standards or unique traffic safety issues).
  • Coordinate projects with relevant parties.
  • Examples include staff, clients, contractors, partners, & outside consultants.
  • Assist marketing efforts.
  • Communicate and interact professionally with relevant parties for projects and events.
  • Examples of parties: team members, client representatives, & review agencies.
  • Example activities: progress/client/public meetings; PSAs; press conferences; coalitions; team calls; networking events; trainings
  • Prepare information to explain projects to stakeholders & the public (project fact sheets, PowerPoint slides, etc.).
  • Mentor, share information, and supervise work of less experienced personnel in a team.

Knowledge of:

  • Standard professionalism, & office practices & procedures.
  • Practical application of engineering principles, practices, & techniques.
  • National Resources (HCM, HSM, MUTCD, AASHTO, DOT, FHWA, NHTSA, NACTO…).
  • FDOT Resources & Policies (FDM, TEM, MUTS, Speed Zoning Manual, ICE Manual, SHSP…).

Skilled in:

  • Important: Synchro/SimTraffic & MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint). Beneficial: MicroStation/ORD, HCS, SIDRA, VISSIM, ArcGIS, & CUBE or VISUM.
  • Explanation, persuasion, & negotiation of critical issues.
  • Strong communication (written & oral).
  • Strong organizational, project, & time management.
  • Planning, scheduling, coordinating, & conducting transportation/traffic engineering work.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail & desire to learn.
  • Commit to rigorous quality control (QC) approach to engineering solutions.
  • Research & learn innovative solutions & best practices in the industry.
  • Learn FDOT standards, policies, & procedures.
  • Learn firm standard operations, policies, & procedures.
  • Be proactive in determining necessary steps to meet objectives & performance expectations.
  • Work independently on multiple tasks & take ownership of tasks*.

*Supervision may vary; the candidate should not need immediate/constant supervision.

  • Serve as a team member in project groups. 
  • Interact professionally and comfortably with various personalities & communication styles.
  • Build & maintain excellent interpersonal relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Civil or Transportation Engineering (or M.S. in a similar field) or B.S. in planning related field.
  • E.I. certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • 0-5 years of experience in traffic engineering or planning. Internship experience is preferred.
  • FDOT experience is preferred.
