POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal
FLSA: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month employment
SUPERVISES: Certified and Classified Employees
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement as Principal (Elementary/Middle/Secondary) or Administration and Supervision
- Have three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience
- Possess oral and written communication skills to work effectively with school personnel, students and parents
- Possess appropriate computer technology skills Must have effective leadership skills and a demonstrated knowledge of school curriculum and school administration
PREFERRED:
- Three years of grade level experience as position sought
FOCUS: The focus of the Assistant Principal is to assist the building principal on accountability for the educational, administrative, and supervisory functions in the school building. The assistant principal must communicate and enforce directives and policies approved by the Board of Education and Central Office administration to the building personnel, as delegated by the principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in general supervision of building and grounds for the safety and welfare of students and staff
- Oversee the implementation of high quality State and local assessments to meet State requirements and track student progress on State standards
- Provide effective leadership which results in acceptable, measurable student academic progress based on established standards
- Foster the success of students by demonstrating professional standards and ethics, engaging in continuous professional development, and contributing to the profession
- Responsible for the safety, security, and cleanliness of the school facility and grounds
- Responsible for school activities abiding by all federal, State, and School Board laws, policies, and regulations
- Assist with scheduling and enrollment of students and grade reporting
- Assist with assignment and evaluation of teachers and classified staff in the building
- Assist the principal in building schedules, fostering communication between stakeholders, and implementing strategies to improve instruction
- Assist the principal in faculty supervision and evaluation in accordance with Division evaluation policy
- Share with principal the responsibility for administering the Division’s discipline and attendance policies through accepted building procedures
- Assist in the supervision of the school’s cafeteria program and transportation system
- Assist teachers in interpreting assessment and evaluation information in making instructional decisions
- Provide leadership for maintaining an effective school climate
- Promote and ensure a high level of student attendance
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Inform the principal and appropriate Central Office personnel of problems, progress, and plans in building as they occur
- Support and participate in parent/community activities
- Share professional growth activities with staff to improve educational programs and better meet District goals and expectations
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building Principal or Central Office Administrators
