We are seeking a Deputy Chief Underwriter to join our FHA team. The will proactively manage the FHA/HUD Underwriting team Deputy Chief Underwriter and the associated loan pipeline, work with originations, operations and underwriters to facilitate the processing and underwriting of loans. The Deputy Chief Underwriter will be responsible to manage the day-to-day activities of all underwriting team members and provide guidance, support, and direction to the group throughout the underwriting process.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages and provides leadership to the underwriting team.
- Oversees entire underwriting process to insure all FHA/HUD loans are underwritten properly and appropriate commitments are issued in a timely manner.
- Assesses transaction risk, provides risk mitigation strategies, and deal structuring recommendations.
- Works collaboratively with the origination platform to problem solve and develop creative transaction structuring solutions delivering best-in-class execution.
- Interfaces directly with the borrowers and external clients when necessary.
- Communicates with the underwriting team and between the team, closing, origination, the Chief Underwriter and investors.
- Functions as a problem solver and troubleshooter during the underwriting process.
- Acts as an “issue identifier” throughout the process, ensuring that there are no last-minute surprises.
- Assigns tasks and specific work assignments to team members and project manages these assignments as needed. Ensures appropriate distribution of work between analysts and underwriters. Interacts with team members daily in prioritization of activities for the team.
- Provides guidance and training to underwriters and analysts.
- Responsible for thorough knowledge of Greystone and Investor Underwriting Guidelines.
- Knows the status and understands the deal issues and appropriately communicates up and down the chain.
Experience, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor’s degree required with Accounting, Finance, Economics or Real Estate concentration preferred.
- A minimum of 7- 10 years' previous work experience with analyzing/underwriting FHA/HUD loans in a commercial real estate lending environment is required.
- At least 3 years of experience supervising; minimum of four years’ experience in a senior underwriting position, specifically FHA/HUD multifamily underwriting.
- Requires an independent worker with good project management knowledge and ability to adjust to ever changing environment.
- Requires a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Highly developed analytical, research and oral presentation skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational skills and writing ability.
- Proficiency with Excel and Word.
- High level of personal accountability.
