The Job: The Carpenter supports museum infrastructure, operations, and exhibits, working in a diverse setting and interfacing with museum stakeholders to successfully complete carpentry projects.
This is a 40-hour/week, union-represented position (IBEW, AFL-CIO, Local #134) with regular hours and occasional overtime.
- Read blueprints, drawings, or sketches for information pertaining to the measurements and type of material that is required.
- Lay out and install different types of flooring, drywall, ceiling grid, tiles, etc.
- Assemble furniture, cabinets, shelves and other items and install them where designated.
- Erect scaffolding and other construction structures.
- Cut, fabricate and install wooden and other structures according to specifications.
- Install mirrors, toilet partitions, toilet accessories, etc.
- Work with minimal supervision in completing tasks and projects.
- Install, maintain, and dismantle permanent and temporary exhibits.
- Follow all health and safety protocols.
- Other duties as assigned.
- The ability to complete required Preventative Maintenance assignments within required time as per work instruction/order.
- Close out work assignments as scheduled daily.
- Accountable for all your daily work time on all work assignments/work orders within the provided computer-based system.
- Ability to account for and document parts used for a repair or replacement on the required work instruction/order.
- Responsible for inventory and reconciling inventory of related equipment, and materials needed to complete required jobs on a yearly basis.
- Four (4) years' carpentry experience required; working as a journey-level carpenter a plus.
- High school diploma or additional carpenter certification is a plus.
- Knowledge of wood properties and other carpentry materials.
- Able to operate carpentry equipment (drill presses, table saws, CNC's. etc.)
- Basic Microsoft Office and email computer skills.
- Able to follow instructions.
- Able to operate lifts of all kinds and at all heights.
- Communicates well with others.
- High level of initiative and exceptional problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in tight or cramped spaces.
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Able to work nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.
- Language:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization.
- Mathematical:
- Ability to calculate basic math and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Reasoning:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
- Physical:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
- The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
- The employee must be able to lift heavy items (up to 50 pounds).
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Work Environment:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to humid and/or outside weather conditions; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
