Job Summary:

We are seeking a phlebotomist to join our laboratory team. The phlebotomist will be responsible for performing blood collections through venipuncture or capillary puncture and processing samples for internal and external distribution. This role includes printing and processing patient reports, providing reception support, and performing clerical, computer, and housekeeping functions as necessary. Additional responsibilities may include walking or driving to deliver reports, pick up specimens, or collect blood samples from customers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform blood collection via venipuncture or capillary puncture.
  • Process and distribute samples for internal and external use.
  • Print and/or process patient reports and offer reception support.
  • Perform clerical tasks, including data entry, filing, and report processing.
  • Carry out housekeeping duties to ensure the cleanliness of the laboratory area.
  • Drive or walk to clients to deliver reports, pick up specimens, or collect blood samples.

Job Requirements:

  • Required Licenses and Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Required Work Experience: Entry-level

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clinical phlebotomy experience preferred

Functional Demands:

  • Population(s) Served: Neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations
  • Physical Demands:
    • Lifting: Maximum of 40 lbs. from floor to knee, 1x per day.
    • Push/Pull: Moderate force required for centrifuge use.
    • Carrying: Phlebotomy tray (up to 5 lbs.) for up to 50% of the 10-hour shift.
    • Fine motor skills required for blood drawing, labeling, and computer use.
    • Standing: Up to 15 minutes at a time and 8 hours in one day.
    • Sitting: Up to 15 minutes at a time and 2 hours in one day.
    • Stooping, kneeling, crouching: Frequent throughout the day to collect samples.
    • Driving: Up to 45 minutes a day to deliver reports or collect samples.
    • Occasional lifting of supplies weighing up to 10 pounds, frequent carrying of the phlebotomy tray, and occasional climbing of stairs.

Environmental Conditions:

    • Location: Inside.
    • Exposure: constant exposure to wet conditions from hand washing and solutions. Frequent exposure to noise from centrifuges, telephones, computer printers and laboratory equipment. Constant exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals in laboratory reagents. Constant exposure to biohazardous materials from patient specimens including blood, urine, stool, CSF, and other body fluids. Occasional exposure to fumes from staining reagents and constant exposure to odors from laboratory reagents and body fluids.
    • Required protective equipment: laboratory coat required either personal or hospital supplied. Gloves are required for all specimen collection and processing. Safety goggles or safety shield required for specimen processing.
    • Closed-toe shoes required.
    • OSHA Category: Class I High Risk.
