Job Title: Parent Counselor

Job Summary:
GRO Community is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Parent Counselor to work with the mothers and caregivers of African American boys who are receiving counseling and support through our organization. The Parent Counselor will provide counseling, case management, and support services tailored to the unique needs of these families, helping to foster a healthy and supportive home environment. This role requires a candidate with an outgoing attitude who can build rapport with parents and is willing to conduct home visits. The successful candidate must have provisional licensure in social work, counseling, or family therapy.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide individual and family counseling to mothers and caregivers of African
American boys in GRO Community programs.
Offer case management services, connecting families with community resources,
support systems, and additional services as needed.
Conduct home visits to build relationships and offer direct support in a familiar environment.
Work collaboratively with GRO Community’s clinical team to ensure a holistic
approach to the family’s emotional, mental, and social well-being.
Maintain detailed records of counseling sessions and case management
activities, ensuring all documentation is up to date and compliant with agency
policies.
Facilitate support groups or workshops aimed at helping mothers and caregivers
strengthen their relationships with their sons and navigate the challenges they
may face.
Develop individualized care plans that reflect each family’s needs, strengths, and
goals, providing ongoing support and adjustments as necessary.
Qualifications:
Provisional licensure in social work, counseling, family therapy, or a related field.
Experience working with African American families, particularly those impacted
by community violence or trauma, is highly preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and connect with families
in a culturally competent manner.
Willingness to conduct home visits and work in various community settings.
Excellent communication, case management, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Commitment to GRO Community’s mission of supporting African American boys
and their families through culturally competent mental health services.
Preferred Experience:
Experience with trauma-informed care or similar therapeutic models.
Familiarity with community resources in Chicago and Cincinnati that serve
African American families.
Education/Credential Requirement:
Bachelor degree required
LSW, LPC, or LMFT required
