SPECIAL EDUCATION HEALTH TECHNICIAN
Purpose Statement:
The job of Special Education Health Technician is done for the purpose/s of assisting the District Nurse in providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students as may be required; maintaining health records; and ensuring compliance with state, local and federal rules, regulations and laws. Incumbents in this classification provide direct academic support to students and teachers which directly supports learning.
This job reports to Principal or Designee
Essential Functions
• Administers first aid and medication to students under the direction of a District Nurse for the purpose of caring for students’ immediate health needs.
• Answers multi line telephone system for the purpose of screening calls, transferring calls, responding to inquiries and/or taking messages.
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring and efficient and effective work environment.
• Assists students requiring specialized health care procedures (e.g. toileting, tube feeding, suctioning, EPI-Pen, etc.) for the purpose of addressing immediate health care needs and/or allowing students to function in a school environment.
• Cleans work areas and student resting areas (e.g. changing pillow cover, disposing of body fluids, wiping counters, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment.
• Communicates with students, parents/guardians and other staff for the purpose of conveying information relating to student health status and/or proper procedures.
• Greets visitors for the purpose of responding to their inquiries and/or directing them to appropriate personnel.
• Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. medical emergency cards, medication logs, accident reports, daily logs, supply inventories, etc.) for the purpose of resolving discrepancies in records and/or ensuring compliance with established regulations.
• Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. tube feeding pumps, stands, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of supplies and equipment in proper working condition.
• Supervises students within the health room for the purpose of monitoring students referred for illness and/or observation.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid; handling hazardous materials; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: health standards and hazards; office application software; safety practices and procedures; first aid and emergency equipment and procedures; District health policies, universal health precautions; and proper handling of hazardous waste.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working with detailed information/data; setting priorities; and being flexible.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 50% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions and in a clean atmosphere.
Experience Job related experience is desired.
Education High School diploma or equivalent.
