What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Aide position at Groton Utilities?

SUMMARY

The Electric Engineering Aide, under the general supervision of Manager, Engineering, knows and performs all the functions and duties relating to Project Management Operations, Drafting, Outage Management System (OMS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and Computer Aide Design (CAD) operations and activities. This individual draws on experience gained in previous job assignments and exercises initiative in developing solutions to Department and customer service problems. Promotes good harmony and communication among all employees. Assists higher classifications in the performance of their duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs work in accordance with applicable Federal and State safety regulations as well as Groton Utilities Safety Manual.

2. Provides preliminary drawings for designs of projects.

3. Understands the functions of the SCADA system.

4. Operates and maintains the OMS.

5. Operates and maintains the GIS.

6. Operates and maintains the CAD.

7. Interprets data, prepares graphs and reports.

8. Provides data and drawings for as-built plans.

9. Performs required engineering and prepares work orders and cost estimates for various projects.

10. Prepares bills of material from completed plans.

11. Responsible for cost control of various project

12. Assists in the control and coordination of office operations including, but not limited to customer relations, office equipment and supplies, radios, reports and purchasing.

13. Prepares contract documents, easements, special agreements, change orders or supplemental agreements as needed.

14. Has the ability to locate underground facilities using mechanical and electronic locating devices and responds to Call Before You Dig (CBYD) requests.

15. Takes a problem or a request for work or service, analyzes the situation, prepares a design to include estimates and oversees the final construction plan or work order for various electrical projects.

16. Directs, trains and appraises the work of engineering personnel assigned to him/her.

17. Performs complex fault current, voltage and capacity studies.

18. Develops specifications, technical studies, policies, material and construction standards.

19. Performs duties of lower classifications and other duties as may be assigned by the General Manager, Electric Operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess and maintain as a condition of employment a valid driver’s license and safely operate City of Groton vehicles.

Must possess skills to use various types of engineering equipment, explain functions of land surveying and map plotting.

Must have excellent communication skills when dealing with employees, vendors and the general public.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Associates degree from an accredited college or university in electronic or electrical engineering or six (6) years equivalent field experience.

Minimum ofthree (3) yearsof CAD experience and two (2) years of GIS.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to respond in a timely manner to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.

Ability to work closely with others in developing technical studies and reports, ability to maintain a sense of control under pressure of emergency conditions and be able to work in small groups where teamwork is essential in maintaining the accuracy of work.

Must be able to speak, understand and comprehend the English language.

Ability to take verbal or written instructions and develop them into detailed plans.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to interpret technical information, work from all types of information to prepare plans using drawing skills, symbols and standards of neatness and accuracy suitable to the Department.

Ability to use various types of engineering equipment, explain functions of land surveying and map plotting.

Ability to apply fractions, percentages and ratios and understand basic algebra concepts.

REASONING ABILITY

Must be able to read and interpret plans, drawings, specifications, wiring diagrams and schematics.

Ability to understand and apply basic electricity and engineering principles.

Ability to solve electrical related technical problems.

Ability to effectively present information to management.

Ability to understand and apply basic electricity engineering principles.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and/or hear. The employee must be able carry and/or lift up to a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to work and climb steel structures and ladders at elevated heights. Specific vision abilities required by this job include normal eyesight with or without glasses. The individual must be capable of long periods of sitting, standing or walking associated with office or field conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather while in the field. The individual could be subject to open ditches, rough grades, poisonous plants and/or insects while in the field. The employee at times may be asked to report to work after hours for emergencies, trouble calls and power restoration.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $51.43 - $56.02 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
